With the MLS season drawing to a close in the next couple of months, it was another fiercely competitive round of fixtures this weekend. Here, we'll run you through the key results from the past few days.
Nashville secure victory as Mukhtar steals the show
Nashville extended their lead at the top of the MLS table after beating Toronto 2-0. It was a comfortable win for the league leaders, with Hany Mukhtar scoring both goals for the home side. That means Mukhtar has now scored 13 goals in 27 games for Nashville this season as he spearheads his team's chase for the title. Nashville now lead MLS on 60 points, with both New England and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami trailing on 46 points.
Messi’s Miami drop valuable points
Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami dropped valuable points to Columbus Crew on Sunday after losing 2-1. Josef Martínez put Columbus Crew 1-0 up in the 28th minute after converting a penalty, but it didn’t take Ballon d’Or nominee Messi long to level the scores, finding the net in the 33rd minute. The second half rumbled on, with both sides creating goalscoring opportunities, but nothing of note happened until the 96th minute when Santiago Morales was sent off for a second bookable offence. This gave Columbus Crew the impetus to push for the win in the dying moments. They got what they were looking for just two minutes after Morales’ red card, as Jamal Thiaré scored to win the game for the Crew. It will be a disappointing result for Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, as they lose even more ground to Nashville, who moved 14 points clear at the top of the table.
New England lose ground on Columbus Crew
New England lost even more ground to Columbus Crew on Saturday 27 September after being comfortably beaten by Real Salt Lake. The match ended 3-0, with A. Hezarkhani scoring in just the second minute to put Real Salt Lake ahead before Sergi Solans scored in both the 62nd and 80th minutes to round off the victory in style. New England tried to fight their way back into the game, but it was all in vain as they failed to pull one back. The result will be particularly sobering as it means New England are now 14 points behind MLS leaders Nashville. And, with the season heading into its final couple of months, time is running out for New England to build the form needed to chase Nashville all the way.
