Martchweek of the Premier League kicked off on Saturday with the Liverpool’s match, in which Iraola’s side could not break the 0-0 deadlock against Fulham. The same happened to Tottenham when they hosted Everton. Elsewhere, Chelsea let a lead slip against newly-promoted Hull City. While the day belonged to Arsenal, who beat Sunderland to stay perfect through four matches.
Arsenal maintains a perfect record
Arsenal needed until the 58th minute to break down a stubborn Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, when Bruno Guimarães converted a Declan Rice assist to make it 0-1. The match was very tight up to that point, with Raya as the hero by saving a penalty taken by Enzo Le Fée two minutes before Guimarães opened the scoring. Sunderland pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages and had Mandava sent off for a second yellow card in the 90+5th minute, before Bukayo Saka settled the contest with a stoppage-time penalty of his own at 90+7'. The 2-0 win keeps Arsenal top of the table on 12 points from four games.
Hull frustrate a leaky Chelsea
After a morale-boosting midweek victory and an early goal from Morgan Rogers in the seventh minute, it looked like Chelsea were set for a comfortable win at Stamford Bridge; however, Hull City fought back, turning the match around with two goals from Mohamed Belloumi in the space of six minutes. The first came in the 28th minute following a poorly judged cross by Hato, and the second in the 35th after ‘Dibu’ Martínez came off his line poorly during a corner, resulting in a shot at the crossbar before getting to Belloumi to make it 1-2.
After surviving another error by Martínez, João Pedro restored the parity, assisted by Cole Palmer. The Brazilian is the standout performer for Xabi Alonso’s team, with three goals and two assists to his name. The Blues kept pressing, but Tzolakis came to the rescue for the Tigers. This draw means Chelsea have now gone 20 league matches without a clean sheet, their longest run since 1961, while Hull remain unbeaten in their first month back in the top flight.
Lackluster goalless draw at Anfield and Spurs remain winless
At Tottenham, the wait for a first league goal of the season goes on: the 0-0 draw with Everton means Spurs have gone 407 minutes without scoring, their longest goalless start to a season since 2006, and it was also the first scoreless draw at their stadium in 140 Premier League home matches. Jordan Pickford, at the other end, picked up his 100th career clean sheet in the competition.
