FA Cup Quarter-Finals Round-Up
The FA Cup quarter-finals produced a weekend of shocks and statement performances, with Manchester City, Southampton, Chelsea and Leeds United all booking their places in the last four. FA Cup tickets for the semi-finals are now among the most sought-after in English football.
Manchester City 4-0 Liverpool
Manchester City delivered a ruthless performance to dismantle Liverpool 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland stealing the show with a devastating hat-trick. The result extended City's unbeaten home run in the FA Cup to eighteen consecutive victories, surpassing a record held by Clapham Rovers since 1881.
With Pep Guardiola serving a touchline ban, former Liverpool assistant Pepijn Lijnders took charge of City from the dugout — an irony not lost on the home supporters.
Liverpool actually began brightly and had a golden opportunity inside the first quarter-hour when Mohamed Salah broke clear, only to see his effort deflect wide off the post via Uzbek defender Abdukhadir Khusanov. But City's clinical edge proved the difference.
The breakthrough came just before half-time when Virgil van Dijk caught Nico O'Reilly with a clumsy challenge inside the box. Haaland stepped up and converted the penalty to make it 1-0. The Norwegian then struck again in stoppage time, glancing an Antoine Semenyo cross into the far corner to send City in 2-0 at the break.
Semenyo added a third shortly after the restart, punishing a careless Joe Gomez throw-in that led to a slick move finished with a deft chip. Haaland completed his hat-trick with thirty minutes still remaining to put the game well beyond Liverpool's reach, prompting a mass exodus from the away end. Salah's late penalty miss — saved by James Trafford — summed up a miserable afternoon for Arne Slot's side.
City, already League Cup winners this season, remain in contention for three trophies. Liverpool will now turn their attention to the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain.
Southampton 2-1 Arsenal
In one of the biggest upsets of the FA Cup season, Championship side Southampton knocked out Premier League leaders Arsenal with a 2-1 win at St Mary's.
Ross Stewart gave the hosts a first-half lead, and Arsenal struggled to find a way through until Viktor Gyökeres — who will face the Netherlands at the World Cup this summer — pulled the Gunners level midway through the second half. But rather than push on for a winner, Arsenal were caught cold in the closing stages as Shea Charles fired home to complete a famous victory for Southampton.
It is a second cup final defeat for Arsenal this season, having lost the League Cup final to Manchester City last month, though they continue to lead the Premier League by nine points.
Chelsea 7-0 Port Vale
Chelsea had no such trouble in their quarter-final, thrashing League One side Port Vale 7-0 at Stamford Bridge. Dutch international Jorrel Hato — playing his first goal-scoring game in three months — opened the scoring after just one minute, volleying home from close range following a poorly cleared corner.
João Pedro and an own goal made it 3-0 at half-time, before Chelsea added four more after the break through Tosin Adarabioyo, Andrey Santos, Estêvão and Alejandro Garnacho. Seven different scorers on the night underlined Chelsea's dominance.
Leeds United Beat West Ham on Penalties
The final quarter-final went to a dramatic penalty shootout after Leeds United and West Ham finished level at 2-2 following extra time in London. Leeds had led by two goals before West Ham drew level in injury time, but Daniel Farke's side held their nerve in the shoot-out, winning 4-2. Dutch defender Pascal Struijk scored the decisive penalty to send Leeds through.
Semi-Final Draw: Wembley Beckons
The semi-final draw has paired Manchester City against Southampton, while Chelsea will face Leeds United. Both ties will be played at Wembley Stadium on 25 and 26 April respectively.
With a Wembley final on the horizon, demand for tickets is already high. Don't miss your chance to witness the climax of the world's oldest cup competition — FA Cup Final tickets are available now.
