English teams shock in Europa and Conference League

It was a night of contrasting emotions for English clubs in European competition on Thursday. Nottingham Forest celebrated Sean Dyche's successful managerial debut with victory over Porto, while Aston Villa suffered a shock defeat in the Netherlands and Crystal Palace fell to a surprise loss at home. Not all English fans who booked their Europa League tickets and Conference League tickets for this round, are happy with their decision.

Dyche makes winning start as Nottingham Forest overcome Porto

Sean Dyche enjoyed the perfect start to his tenure as Nottingham Forest manager, leading his new side to a 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten Porto in the Europa League. The Englishman, who replaced the sacked Ange Postecoglou, immediately implemented his trademark 4-4-2 formation at the City Ground. Forest were handed a golden opportunity midway through the first half when referee pointed to the spot after Jan Bednarek was adjudged to have handled the ball. With regular penalty taker Chris Wood absent, Morgan Gibbs-White stepped up and confidently converted to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Porto thought they had drawn level early in the second half when Bednarek atoned for his earlier error by bundling the ball home. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside against Samu Aghehowa in the buildup. Forest sealed the points when they were awarded a second penalty, which Igor Jesus dispatched with aplomb to make it 2-0. The victory marked Forest's first win in the Europa League this season and, remarkably, their first victory in any competition since August 17th, before Postecoglou had even taken charge.

Aston Villa stunned by Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer

Aston Villa suffered an embarrassing 2-1 defeat away to Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer, falling victim to one of the Europa League's biggest upsets of the season. The Premier League club appeared to be cruising after Evann Guessand gave them an early lead in the fourth minute, capitalizing on a defensive error by Mats Deijl.

Just before halftime, the match turned on its head. Mathis Suray pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the penalty area, and his deflected shot beat Emiliano Martínez to level the scores at 1-1. The equalizer gave Go Ahead renewed belief heading into the break, despite losing Gerrit Nauber and Jakob Breum to injury.

The home side's confidence grew in the second half as Villa struggled to recapture their early dominance. In the 61st minute, Go Ahead completed a remarkable turnaround when Deijl made amends for his first-half error, finishing coolly past Martínez following a swift counter-attack down the right flank. The goal sparked wild celebrations in the stands.

Villa were handed a lifeline when Dean James was penalized for handball in the penalty area. However, Emiliano Buendía blasted the spot-kick high over the crossbar, leaving Villa's 10,000 traveling supporters in despair. Despite intense late pressure, Go Ahead held firm to secure a famous three points. The result leaves Go Ahead on six points from three matches, an extraordinary achievement for a club whose mere presence in the Europa League was already considered a success.

Crystal Palace fall to surprise defeat at Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace, considered among the favorites to win the Conference League, suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat to Cypriot side AEK Larnaca. The visitors, who had already stunned AZ Alkmaar 4-0 in their opening fixture, claimed another impressive scalp at Selhurst Park.

Riad Bajic scored the decisive goal early in the second half, punishing Palace's wastefulness in front of goal. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances throughout the match, Palace were unable to break down a resolute Larnaca defense. The defeat leaves Palace with work to do in the Conference League, while Larnaca sit impressively at the top of the competition standings after their second consecutive victory over favored opposition.

Mixed night for English clubs in Europe

Thursday's results demonstrated the unpredictable nature of European competition. While Nottingham Forest celebrated a morale-boosting victory under their new manager, both Aston Villa and Crystal Palace will be left to rue missed opportunities against supposedly inferior opponents. The defeats serve as a reminder that no fixture can be taken lightly in European football.
