Newcastle United destroys Man United at St James Park

Manchester United suffered one of their most humbling defeats of the season on sunday evening, collapsing 4-1 against a dominant Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. After a promising first half, United fell apart after the break, leaving manager Rúben Amorim and his team with serious questions as their poor Premier League campaign continues.

Bayındır gets the start, Tonali strikes first

Rúben Amorim made a bold pre-match decision by dropping first-choice goalkeeper André Onana following a costly mistake in the midweek 2-2 draw with Olympique Lyon in the Europa League. Altay Bayındır was handed his chance, and the Turkish international impressed early on with several solid saves. However, there was little he could do to stop Sandro Tonali’s fierce strike in the 34th minute, which put the home side ahead after a sharp assist from Alexander Isak. To United’s credit, they responded quickly. Alejandro Garnacho brought his side level before the break with a composed finish, and at halftime, the scoreline read 1-1—leaving everything to play for in the second half.

Second-half collapse

Whatever hopes United had were quickly dashed after the restart. Just moments into the second half, Harvey Barnes regained the lead for Newcastle with a clinical finish. Things went from bad to worse when Joshua Zirkzee was forced off with an injury, further disrupting United’s already shaky rhythm. Barnes struck again minutes later as United’s defense fell apart. Bayındır, solid in the first half, was left completely exposed by a disjointed back line. Bruno Guimarães put the final nail in the coffin with a fourth goal for the hosts, sealing a comprehensive win and sending the home crowd into celebration.

Newcastle eyes Champions League, United in freefall

With the win, Newcastle United moves into a strong position in the race for Champions League qualification. If they win their game in hand, they’ll move four points ahead of Manchester City and leapfrog Nottingham Forest into third place. For Manchester United, the defeat marks their 14th loss of the Premier League season—a staggering number for a club of their stature. What began as a promising revival under Amorim has now descended into renewed uncertainty. As United lurch from inconsistency to crisis, Newcastle's surge toward Europe underlines the contrasting trajectories of both clubs.
