Ipswich Town spoils Amorims debut as Man United manager

25 November 2024 at 15:02

Rúben Amorim’s first match as Manchester United manager ended in disappointment as Ipswich Town held the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night. Despite a promising start, United faltered as the match progressed, leaving Amorim with much to ponder after his Premier League debut.

Dream start for United

It seemed like a dream start for Amorim at Portman Road when Manchester United took the lead in just the second minute. Amad Diallo burst down the right flank, delivering a sharp cross into the box. Marcus Rashford, starting as a striker over Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee, reacted quickest, darting in front of Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric to tap the ball home for the opener. The goal marked Rashford’s return to form and repaid Amorim’s faith in him. Amorim became only the second Premier League manager in history to witness his team score within two minutes of their debut match, joining David Moyes, who achieved the feat with Everton in 2002.

Amorim’s tactical choices

The new manager’s starting lineup featured several notable decisions. Amorim opted for Christian Eriksen and Casemiro as the central midfield pairing, leaving Kobbie Mainoo and summer signing Manuel Ugarte on the bench. In defense, Matthijs de Ligt partnered with Jonny Evans and Noussair Mazraoui in a three-man backline, while Diogo Dalot operated on the left side of midfield. Despite these tactical adjustments, United struggled to maintain control against a determined Ipswich side.

Onana shines but can't save United

While Marcus Rashford grabbed the early headlines, it was goalkeeper André Onana who emerged as United’s standout performer. The Cameroonian made several outstanding saves, particularly denying Liam Delap twice from close range in the first half to preserve United’s lead. However, Ipswich eventually found a way past Onana. Just before halftime, Omari Hutchinson unleashed a powerful, curling strike from outside the box, which deflected slightly off Mazraoui before nestling in the far corner. The equalizer was deserved, as Ipswich had matched United's intensity and created the better opportunities.

Struggles continue after the break

The second half saw United fail to regain control, with Ipswich creating the best chances. Onana once again frustrated Delap with an incredible reflex save, leaving the Ipswich forward visibly stunned. Amorim responded with substitutions, introducing Luke Shaw and Manuel Ugarte early in the half, followed later by Joshua Zirkzee and Højlund. However, these changes failed to ignite United’s attack. Despite Ipswich dominating the chances, United held on for a point, with Onana’s heroics ensuring the visitors didn’t leave empty-handed. Given the match’s flow, a draw might even be seen as a fortunate result for Amorim’s men.

Looking ahead

Amorim's tenure begins with mixed feelings as United drops more points in the Premier League, marking their eighth stumble of the season. The new manager now faces two crucial home matches: a Europa League clash against Bodø/Glimt on Thursday and a Premier League fixture against Everton on Sunday. These games will provide an immediate opportunity for Amorim and his team to regroup and deliver a stronger performance.

Being a guest in the UK we were unsure of the match environment. The Den was a great place to watch a match, and though Millwall wasn’t successful, we had a great EFL experience. Thanks for being great hosts Millwall.

Great experience, everything ran smoothly, the only thing that would be nice is getting the tickets a bit earlier than on the day of the game. but it is a minor issue.

It was good, only minor inconvenient was the fee that appeared at the very end, that added like 60 euros to the final prize
