Hammers beat Man United 2-1 at London Stadium

October 27th, 2024 20:03

Manchester United's struggles in the Premier League continued on Sunday with a 2-1 loss to West Ham United. Erik ten Hag’s side missed a series of clear chances and ultimately fell victim to a highly contentious penalty decision involving Matthijs de Ligt, leaving United in a disappointing 14th place in the league standings.

Frustration mounts for ten Hag's side

Manchester United entered the match at the Olympic Stadium in east London with high expectations but found themselves frustrated by missed opportunities. After four draws and a recent loss, the pressure on ten Hag was evident. The match saw a reunion of former Ajax players, as United's backline was nearly composed entirely of former Amsterdam club players. Additionally, Christian Eriksen faced off against fellow former Ajax star Edson Alvarez in midfield. Meanwhile, West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, another former Ajax player, watched from the stands due to suspension.

United’s missed chances in the first half

United dominated early on, creating numerous scoring opportunities. Alejandro Garnacho had two prime chances within the first twelve minutes, and Diogo Dalot missed perhaps the most glaring opportunity after rounding West Ham keeper Lukasz Fabianski, only to fire over the bar. Despite the abundance of opportunities, United went into halftime with the score still level at 0-0, leaving ten Hag and his coaching staff visibly frustrated on the sidelines.

Summerville and Zirkzee enter the fray

West Ham, who had offered little resistance in the first half, saw a shift in momentum after halftime. The introduction of Crysencio Summerville as a substitute added a new level of threat for the Hammers. The former Feyenoord youth player made an immediate impact, scoring the opening goal and keeping United’s defense under constant pressure. Ten Hag responded by bringing on Joshua Zirkzee, another Dutch player and former Feyenoord youth, who ultimately set up Casemiro's equalizer with ten minutes left.

Controversial late penalty seals United's fate

Just as it seemed United might salvage a point, controversy struck in the 89th minute. In a heated contest for the ball, Matthijs de Ligt collided with Danny Ings in what appeared to be an innocent challenge. However, VAR intervened, and after a lengthy review, referee David Coote awarded a penalty to West Ham, despite replays suggesting that Ings may have committed a handball. Jarrod Bowen converted the penalty, putting West Ham ahead 2-1 and sealing the result. Ten Hag voiced his frustrations after the game, highlighting the significance of De Ligt’s forced exit due to a series of officiating decisions. "It was simply dried blood," ten Hag remarked. "Why should he leave the field? Everyone knows West Ham is strong on corners, and we missed one of our best aerial defenders. They took advantage of that."

A tale of two struggling teams

Both Manchester United and West Ham entered the match amid turbulent times. United was sitting just above the relegation zone, while West Ham also faced relegation concerns. United now sits precariously in 14th place, with ten Hag under growing pressure to reverse his team's fortunes. For West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui, who also faces a precarious position, the victory provided a much-needed reprieve. United will need to regroup quickly as they seek to climb back into the top half of the Premier League. However, unless they can capitalize on scoring chances and resolve defensive lapses, their hopes of reversing this season's downward trend may remain elusive.

Superb! Easy to purchase a ticket. I had a live customer service chat once, the staff member was so polite, helpful and informative. I loved the communication after purchase. On the match day they contacted me on WhatsApp if I want an upgrade on my tickets for free and after my confirmation I got my tickets within a minute. Great experience, thank you.

This is the best and most trusted website to get your tickets to any world event. I have used them 3 times throughout the years, I have used other sites for football matches and they are so transparent and fast, the first time I used them was in 2018 for a Roma match and then made the mistake to use a different site for the PSG match in April and they were terrible, from the website, customer service and responses. this is the only site I trust and use!

Bought 2 Club Wembley tickets less than 48 hours before the Championship Play Off Final. Good communication and tickets arrived the following day by email. No problems getting into the stadium and seats were great. Unfortunately my team’s performance was the only let down. Would definitely use this company again.
