English Teams in the Europa League matchday 2

The Europa League continues to be a mixed bag for English clubs. Manchester United narrowly avoided disaster in a thrilling 3-3 draw with FC Porto, while Tottenham Hotspur maintained their strong start with a 2-1 victory over Ferencváros.

Maguire saves United from another setback

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is facing mounting pressure as his side’s form remains inconsistent. In what was billed as a must-win game for United, they were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw against FC Porto in Portugal. Despite taking a 2-0 lead, United’s defensive frailties once again came to the fore. United started brightly, with Marcus Rashford scoring in the seventh minute and Rasmus Højlund doubling the lead soon after, thanks to a mistake by Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa. It seemed like ten Hag could finally relax on the bench. However, that optimism was short-lived. Porto equalized within ten minutes with goals from Pepe and Samu Omorodion, both capitalizing on United’s defensive lapses, particularly from Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt.

This match marked the 31st time since the start of last season that United have conceded two or more goals in a game, a statistic that underscores their ongoing struggles at the back. Things went from bad to worse after halftime, as Omorodion scored again to give Porto a 3-2 lead. United’s chances of a comeback seemed bleak when captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off for the second time in a week, leaving the team with ten men. But in stoppage time, substitute Harry Maguire rose to the occasion, heading in a late equalizer to rescue a point for the Red Devils. While the draw prevented an outright disaster, it is far from the result ten Hag needed. With a crucial Premier League clash against Aston Villa looming, his position remains under intense scrutiny.

Tottenham continue their winning streak

Tottenham Hotspur, on the other hand, are enjoying their Europa League campaign under Ange Postecoglou. After a 3-0 win over FK Qarabag last week, Spurs continued their good form with a 2-1 victory over Hungarian side Ferencváros. Despite fielding a young and somewhat experimental lineup, Tottenham were largely in control throughout the match. Teenagers Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Mikey Moore, and Will Lankshear all started, alongside more experienced players like Timo Werner and Cristian Romero.

Pape Matar Sarr opened the scoring for Spurs after Ferencváros failed to clear their lines, allowing the midfielder to score a simple tap-in. Tottenham came close to doubling their lead several times, with Pedro Porro hitting the post and Lankshear narrowly missing a volley. It wasn’t until the second half that Brennan Johnson, continuing his incredible run of form, made it 2-0 with a well-taken shot that went in off the post. This marked Johnson’s fifth consecutive game with a goal. Ferencváros pulled one back late on through Barnabás Varga, but Tottenham were never in real danger of losing their lead. The win keeps Spurs firmly on course in the Europa League group stage.

Contrasting fortunes for English sides

For Manchester United, the 3-3 draw against Porto felt like a missed opportunity, with more questions than answers surrounding their defensive issues and ten Hag’s future. Tottenham, however, continue to impress with their blend of youth and experience, and Postecoglou’s side looks capable of making a deep run in the competition. As the league stages progress, both teams will aim for consistency. United will need to regroup quickly ahead of their upcoming Premier League matches, while Spurs will look to keep their winning streak alive. With the new format, Tottenham Hotspur is currently in the top 8 on the Europa League table. Finishing in the top 8 will mean they automatically qualify for the final 16 and getting closer to the final in Bilbao. Manchester United is currently 21st. Everywhere in between 9th and 24th will mean a place in the knockout stages play-offs.
