Now the dust of another extremely exciting English football season has settled, it’s time to look ahead. The international Man City and Man United players are having a short break before they will join the England squad for the Euro 2024 tournament. It looks like some of these players won’t have much rest this summer. Where their national team goes far in the Euro’s there isn’t much time to rest before the new season starts. The Euro 2024 final will be played on the 14th of July. Four weeks later the Community Shield takes place at Wembley. In this article we look into the teams that will play the Community Shield and how they qualified for it.
Premier League champions
The Community Shield is traditionally the season opener between the Premier League winners and the FA Cup winners. When one team wins both, the runners-up in the league will get the second ticket. This time Manchester City won their fourth consecutive title and therefore qualifies for their fourth consecutive Community Shield. Even though they always qualify as the best team in the league, Man City struggles to win the Community Shield. Pep Guardiola is always working on his team this early in the season and therefore they lost the last three times. Can they do better this year?
FA Cup winner
The FA Cup final was a Manchester derby for the second year in a row. Last year Manchester City won the FA Cup as part of their treble. This time Manchester United ended on top of their neighbours. With goals by youngsters Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, Man United won 2-1. This win means another trophy for the Red Devils, but also a ticket for the Community Shield. Thanks to United’s win, the 2024 Community Shield will be a replay of the FA Cup final. Are we going to see the same winner, or will Man City be up for it this time?
