English Champions League results

Two English teams played their first round of 16 match of this Champions League tournament. Chelsea played at home against Lille, while Manchester United played away against Atletico Madrid. In this article we discuss the results of these two teams on their journey to try and get to the Champions League final.

Chelsea versus Lille

Chelsea had a very decent draw against Lille. The reigning Ligue 1 champion is currently on the 11th place in the French league. They aren’t in the best form ever, so loads of opportunities for Chelsea to reach the next round. The first match of this tie was at Stamford Bridge. Thomas Tuchel let Lukaku out of the team, his replacement Kai Havertz opened the score early in the game. In the 8th minute of the match, he scored the 1-0 for Chelsea. For a long time 1-0 looked to be the final score, but in the 63rd minute Pulisic doubled the lead for Chelsea. A very important goal, which looks to have settled the tie in Chelsea’s favour.

Atletico Madrid versus Manchester United

Manchester United had a tough away match in Madrid. Atletico started this match very good with an early goal in the 7th minute by Joao Felix. Manchester United tried to get a goal back, but they were very poor in this game. For quite a long time it looked like Atletico Madrid was the only possible team to score the second goal in this match. In the 80th minute Bruno Fernandes played the ball to Anthony Elanga. The Swedish youngster entered the box and managed to put the ball past Oblak in the far corner. A goal that can prove to be very valuable. Thanks to this goal Manchester United goes back to Manchester with a 1-1 draw instead of a 1-0 loss. Which leaves them with a bigger opportunity to qualify for the quarter final.
