Chelsea wins it late against 10 men of Southampton

The match of Chelsea versus Southampton looked to be an easy victory for Chelsea before the match. But if you look a little bit closer, you will see it isn’t as easy as people expected. Southampton proved to be very solid in defence. They recently got two 0-0 draws against Manchester City and West Ham United. Two strong teams who almost always know how to score one of more goals. Chelsea immediately noticed that Southampton isn’t a team that got pushed over. Even though Chelsea scored an early goal by Chalobah, they never really destroyed Southampton.

Another disappointment for Timo Werner

Timo Werner is one of those players, who doesn’t go well together with VAR. Just before half-time he scored the 2-0, but this goal got disallowed by VAR. Which brings him on a total of 16 goals that got taken away by VAR. This is another very frustrating moment for the German, who really needs some goals on his tally. Thanks to this VAR decision it stayed 1-0 for Chelsea at the end of the first half.

Exciting second half

With a 1-0 score at half-time, there was still everything to play for in the second half. James Ward-Prowse became the man of the second half. In the 61st minute he netted a penalty for Southampton, getting the draw back on the board. Roughly 15 minutes later, he got a red card for serious foul play on Jorginho. With 13 minutes of regular time to go, Chelsea got the upper hand with 11 against 10. In the 84th minute, Timo Werner finally got his goal, giving his team the lead with just a few more minutes to go. Five minutes later Ben Chilwell decided the match with the 3-1. With this result Chelsea takes the first place on the Premier League table, at least temporarily depending on the result of Liverpool versus Manchester City.
