The Cityzens qualified for another Community Shield match. They qualified by winning the 2020-2021 Premier League. After a rough start, they quite easily won the league last season. Now it’s up to them to face Leicester City on the 7th of August at Wembley. In this article we look back at the Community Shield matches Manchester City played in their history. 1934 Arsenal versus Manchester City 4-0

The first time Manchester City played for the Charity Shield is one to forget. In 1934 they got absolutely battered by Arsenal. Manchester City qualified for this match after winning the FA Cup. Arsenal won the First Divsion and got the advantage of playing at home at Highbury. The Gunners won this match pretty easily.

1937 Manchester City versus Sunderland 2-0

Manchester City waited only three years to take revanche for the humilation by Arsenal. After winning the First Divison Man City played Sunderland for the 1937 FA Charity Shield. This time Manchester City has the advantage of playing at home at Maine Road and they exploided this advantage by beating Sunderland 2-0. With this victory Manchester City finally won their first FA Charity Shield.

1956 Manchester United versus Manchester City 1-0

World War II and the some poor seasons by Man City, made them wait almost 20 years to play another Charity Shield match. In 1956 it was a Manchester derby at Maine Road. Unfortunately for the Cityzens, their neighbours were just too strong with a 1-0 victory for Manchester United. Man City now won 1 FA Charity Shield and lost two of them.

1968 Manchester City versus West Bromwich Albion 6-1

This is already the third time Manchester City played the FA Charity Shield match at home at Maine Road. In the 1968 edition of this match they whiped West Bromwich Albion away with 6-1. With two goals in the first five minutes, the Cityzens showed the trophy belonged to them early in the game. West Brom never recovered from this quick start by Man City. Thanks to this victory, Man City now is 2-2 in Charity Shield finals won and lost.

1969 Leeds United versus Manchester City 2-1

The fifth time Manchester City played for the Charity Shield was in 1969. Man City qualified for this match but winning the 1968-69 cup. League champions Leeds United was just a little bit too strong in this battle. This loss brings Man City back on a negative balance in the Charity Shield.

1972 Manchester City versus Aston Villa 1-0

Three years after losing the Charity Shield match against Leeds United, Man City claimed their third Charity Shield. A penalty by striker Francis Lee was just about enough for City to beat Aston Villa.

1973 Burnley versus Manchester City 1-0

A year after beating Aston Villa with 1-0, Man City lost with 1-0 against Burnley. Defender Colin Waldron scored the only goal of this match in the 66th minute. This goal brought Burnley their second Charity Shield, while Man City lost for the fourth time in the Charity Shield battle.

2012 Manchester City versus Chelsea 3-2

After losing to Burnley, Manchester City almost had to wait 30 years before they played their next battle. In the meantime the name has been changed from Charity Shield to Community Shield. In this match 2012 Community Shield they played Chelsea. Manchester City won this exciting match with 3-2. Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri all scored for the Cityzens. This victory brings Man City’s score back in a tie with 4 wins and 4 losses.

2014 Arsenal versus Manchester City 3-0

As Premier League champions Man City automatically qualified for the 2014 Community Shield. They faced FA Cup winners Arsenal, who were way too strong for the Cityzens this time. Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud all scored for the Gunners. Leaving Man City back on a negative Community Shield balance.

2018 Manchester City versus Chelsea 2-0

Sergio Aguero was the man of the match in the 2018 Community Shield battle between Manchester City and Chelsea. The Argentinian striker scored both goals in this match. Another trophy in a period where Manchester City was very dominant in English football. Pep Guardiola is winning many trophies with his team.

2019 Manchester City versus Liverpool 1-1

The last Community Shield match that Man City played ended in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool. Eventually the Cityzens won this match with 5-4 on penalties.
