2020-2021 Champions League final preview

The final day of this club football season is almost there. On Saturday evening it’s time for a all-English Champions League final. Manchester City and Chelsea both qualified for the final. In this post we discuss the road to the final from both teams.

Manchester City road to the final

The Cityzens finally managed to get through to the Champions League final. After several attempts, this can be their year to win the trophy. Their Champions League journey started in the group stage with Olympiakos Pireaus, Porto and Olympique de Marseille. They easily qualified for the next round with five wins and a draw. In the round of 16 Man City faced German side Borussia Mochengladbach. With two 2-0 victories, Man City qualified for the quarter finals. A tricky stage for the Cityzens, since they got eliminated in this a round a few times before. This time it was another Germn side, in Borussia Dortmund. Just like in the round of 16, they got two exact same scores (2-1) to get through to the next round. In the semis, they faced their toughest opponent in PSG. The first 45 minutes of this tie was all about PSG, who took a 1-0 lead. Manchester City turned the tie around in the second half of the first match and never gave it away anymore. This brings them into the Champions League final, which will be played in Porto this year.

Chelsea road to the final

Chelsea’s season was one with a lot of ups and downs. They got manager Frank Lampard sacked, but also got to two finals and a top 4 spot. In their Champions League group stage, they topped the group with Rennes, Sevilla and Krasnodar. In the round of 16, the Blues were quite surprisingly much stronger than Atletico Madrid, beating them 1-0 and 2-0. Porto tried to give Chelsea a better match-up, but also the Portuguese side wasn’t capable of beating Chelsea. This brought hem into the semi-finals against Real Madrid. A side that has won the trophy a lot of times, but wasn’t able to go past Chelsea. Tüchel’s team, was steady over two games and managed to reach the final against Manchester City.
