English clubs’ Champions League round-up.

The second round of Champions League matches happed last week, and we will look at how the English clubs fared. Commencing with Tottenham who had a dismal night on Tuesday against Bayern. They started the game well getting an early goal through Son. However, their lead did not last long as three minutes later Kimmich struck a wonder goal to level the scores. The first half was quite tight, and it looked like the two teams would go into half time level, but Lewandowski scored right before the end to give Bayern a 1-2 lead. A few minutes into the first half former Arsenal winger Gnabry scored twice in two manures to make it 1-4. Kane got a goal back from the penalty spot and after that Spurs looked like they could maybe get back into the game. However, the game wore on and they could not find another goal which then led to Spurs players almost giving up and allowing Bayern to score three goals in five minutes to complete their worst European home defeat ever. This leaves Spurs third in their group with only one point from their first two games.

Manchester City were made to work hard in their home game against Dinamo Zagreb. They could not seem to break down a rigid defense until the 66th minute where Mahrez provided the assists for Sterling to get his first Champion League goal of the season. Guardiola wanted a second to wrap up the game but found it difficult and could only get it on the 95th minute when City broke on the counter. This leaves City top of their group with two wins out of two.

On Wednesday Liverpool played and they need a win after losing their first match. They commenced very well getting three goals in the first 36 minutes and it seemed that they put the game to bed already. However, a few minutes later Salzburg got one back to give them slight hope. This was followed by two goals from Salzburg in the first 15 minutes of the second half the level the scores and make things very nervy for Liverpool. Luckily for them, Salah was able to get onto a good ball from Firminho to re-establish their lead and give them the win.

The final English team to play was Chelsea who faced Lille away. Both teams shared a goal apiece in the first half and it took Chelsea until the 77th minute to get the winner from Willian. Chelsea are in third place in their group level on points with Valencia after their game week 1 loss to the Spanish side. Ajax leads the way with two wins out of two.
