Mourinho has been sacked

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has been sacked after two and a half years at the club. The news broke this morning, less than 48 hours after United were beaten 3-1 against Liverpool. Carrick has been put in temporary charge until the Manchester United hierarchy find an interim manager until the end of the season. Mourinho leaves United in 6th position in the Premier League, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool, meaning it is United worst start to a league campaign in 28 years.

There have been rumors that Mourinho would lose his job throughout the whole season. It seems that Mourinho had lost his dressing room after public fallouts with his big stars. The biggest fallout he had was with Paul Pogba, who did not even play against Liverpool on the weekend. There were problems since last season between Pogba and Mourinho, however, when Mourinho stripped Pogba of the vice captaincy, that is when everything seemed to crumble between them. Pogba and Mourinho were also filmed having an argument during training after a loss and their relationship never seemed to repair. Pogba has only started three of the last eight games in all competitions, which is a big shock for someone who is supposed to be United’s main man.

Another big issue with Mourinho and United is that’s their styles of play contradicted each other. United was known for playing exciting, attacking football, whereas Mourinho many times focused more on defensive tactics, trying to null the opponents and get a goal on the counter. There was a period between October and November this season that every game United had to comeback from behind to narrowly win the match. Also, previous public criticism of young stars such as Shaw and Martial have brought moral down and it can be seen that these players are not performing to the best of their capabilities.

Mourinho also has not had the best desired outcomes from the transfers he has made. He has spent over 400 million pounds since joining United, however, there are no Genuine world class players in the team. He signed Lukaku last season, however, he has not hit the heights that was expected and only has scored six goals this season so far. Mourinho clearly stated that he wanted a new centre back in the summer, however, he did not get his wish and the club only signed Fred, Dalot and Grant. Fred who was their big money signing this summer didn’t even make the match day squad against Liverpool.

Last season Manchester United overachieved by finishing 2nd. This led to Mourinho getting an extended contract earlier this year. However, this season things have just not gone for him and the team and it is no surprise that he has lost his job based on how the team has been playing and what has been going on behind the scenes. Let’s see how Manchester United finish the season with new interim coach and where Mourinho ends up next.
