Can Liverpool win a trophy this season?

Liverpool spent very well over the summer. They brought in four players who suit the team. The most essential position on the field that they need to change was the goalkeeper, after Karius’ blunders in the Champions League final. Allison was brought in for a world record for a goalkeeper (which was broken a couple of weeks later by Kepa) to replace Karius. Two new additions were brought into the midfield, with Keita and Fabinho coming in. Lastly Shaqiri was bought in order to provide cover for the front three. These were all good additions to the team and made many people think that Liverpool are genuine title contenders for the Premier league this season.

Liverpool started the season very strong winning their first six games and sitting at the top of the table. However, they then went four games without a win in all competitions before the international break. Liverpool are known to have a high intensity style of playing and also high pressing game. This requires a lot of energy and can become very tiring if you play every few games. Even Klopp thinks his players need some rest. “I know people say they are on a lot of money but people want to see the best football and somebody has to start to give the boys a little break, because we can't as we play every three days.” Jurgen Klopp told Sky Sports.

So far this season Liverpool have only conceded three goals in the premier league. That is a huge improvement on last season and the team looks much more solid defensively with Van Dijk and Joe Gomez as a central pairing. However, has Klopp prioritized the defense over the attack this season? Liverpool are also lacking a creative midfielder. When the team play with a midfield three of Henderson, Milner, and Wijnaldum, they look solid, but the teams lacks that creative spark. Liverpool tried to sign Fekir from Lyon over the summer, but the deal did not materialize. This is something that Liverpool might have to look at in the January transfer window.

Overall the team looks in much better shape than last year and there is more depth. Another positive for Liverpool is the reemergence of Sturridge, who looks rejuvenated this season. Klopp said that in his first three seasons there would be a title for Liverpool. That did not happen, however, this season they look like they are in a good position and have a good team that can win a trophy.
