It took just three minutes for Chelsea to take the lead in the match. Later a cross by, Daniel Sturridge made it all the way to Juan Mata who was at the opposite wing. Mata pulled the ball back and Dider Drogba to pulled off a fantastic bit of footwork and fired the ball low into the corner of the net. Goalkeeper Diego Alves, got a touch of the ball, but it wasn't enough to stop it hitting the back of the net. Jordi Alba only managed hit the outside of the post as a response to Chelsea's goal but Valencia continued to push for a goal after halftime. Drogba netted his second goal of the night in the 75th minute ensuring Chelsea's place in the last 16.

Jelle Vossen fired home a swerving volley 30 minutes into the game and the Belgians entered half time with an advantage. With 11 minutes remaining, Eren Derdiyok managed to equalise. This result sees Leverkusen slip to second place in Group E after Chelsea defeating Valencia. Genk finish in fourth place having drawn at their three home matches and lost at their away trips.
