English Premiership: Liverpool 2-1 Sunderland

Liverpool beat Sunderland 2-1 at Anfield Road last night and are now just 1 point behind Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Steven Gerrard scored from a free kick in the 39th minute and Daniel Sturridge curled an ambitious effort that found the back of the net soon after the re-start.

It was Sturridge’s 20th goal of the season and he should have added another one moments later but his shot accidentally hit Suarez.

Sunderland scored through Ki Sung-Yeung with 15 minutes to go and set up a tense finale but the Reds held on bravely to earn the three points.

This is Liverpool’s seventh consecutive Premiership victory as the Merseyside team keeps on chasing their first league trophy since 1990.

"We have had a wonderful season until now, but there is still a way to go and the message to the supporters is to keep believing," Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers told reporters.

"As the season goes on, we will embrace the pressure and enjoy it."
