Chelsea from title race to top 4 race

Loads of football experts tipped Chelsea as the favourite to win the Premier League this season. Ever since Thomas Tüchel took over the job at Stamford Bridge, the Blues were on the rise. Winning the Champions League final against Manchester City, showed how much the team grew under the German manager. That’s exactly why people expected them to win the Premier League this season. Now we’re roughly on two third of the season, they are fighting for a place in the top 4.

Top 4 race

For a long time Chelsea was on top of the table. With only 14 points out of their last ten matches, the club dropped out of the title race. Chelsea is currently 12 points behind Manchester City, who’ve got an extra match to play. After dropping so many points, Chelsea is now in a race for top 4. They are still in third place at the moment, with 44 points from 23 matches. However, teams like Arsenal (35 from 20) and Tottenham Hotspur (33 from 18) are able to overtake them by winning all their spare matches. Even Manchester United, with 32 points from 20, can come within touching distance if they win all their spare matches.

Rollercoaster end of the season

One thing is for sure, the end of this season is going to be a rollercoaster. Especially due to Covid, which caused loads of postponements. Somewhere this season teams will play they spare matches and only if they’ve all been played, we really know how the table is looking. For now Chelsea is still one of the favourites to finish in the top 4, but they need to improve on their current form. The 1-1 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion is another sign that the team isn’t in the right place at the moment.
