Man United beats Aston Villa but doesn’t convince

Manchester United and Aston Villa have a week of their own this week. On Monday evening they played at Old Trafford in the FA Cup third round. Upcoming Saturday they face each other at Villa Park for a Premier League match. In this article we talk about the first out of two battles between the Mancunians and Villans.

McFred delivers early lead for Man United

Manchester United usually plays with Fred and Scott McTominay as holding midfielders. Fans of the club have giving this duo the name McFred. Both players started in this FA Cup match against Aston Villa and were responsible for the first goal of the match. Fred whipped in a great ball, while McTominay managed to head the ball in the back of the net. An early goal is exactly what Man United lacked in previous games. One should expect this team got some confidence out of an early goal. Nevertheless, they struggled to get into the game.

Goals cancelled

Aston Villa pushed forwards in the second half, which led to a goal by Danny Ings. Unfortunately for Ings and the Villans, VAR got involved and found a reason to cancel this goal. Roughly ten minutes later, Ollie Watkins was the one to score an equaliser. Also this goal got cancelled because of an offside situation. Several attempts by Aston Villa to get that equaliser on the board failed. The McTominay goal was the only goal in this match. A great result for Manchester United, but not a great performance. Which is a bit worrying for Man United fans, with an away match against the same Aston Villa on the schedule for this weekend. Will they do better away from home?
