Roma goals: Aleksandar Kolarov 40, Edin Dzeko 64, Edin Dzeko 70

Chelsea’s big-haired David Luiz is not only fun and entertaining to watch, but also a dangerous man key to many of Chelsea’s victories. A confident and skilled Luiz sent a beautiful right-footed shot around Becker’s outstretched left hand and into the bottom corner of the net to open the match scoring for Chelsea at 11 minutes. At 30 minutes, Chelsea were able to pick off a loose pass and Morata sprinted up the inside-left channel. Morata’s right-footed shot deflected up and looped to the back-post where Eden Hazard sent the ball home from 10 yards making the score 2-0 Chelsea. Then at 40 minutes, Aleksandar Kolarov put the ball past Chelsea’s Zappacosta running by the defender to drill a left-footed shot from 15 yards out that took a deflection and wound up in the top of the goal making the score Chelsea 2-1 Roma at the end of a very exciting first half for the fans. In the second half at 64 minutes, Roma’s Fazio wandered to the halfway line and lofted a diagonal ball to Edin Dzeko who watched the ball over his left shoulder and connected brilliantlly with his left foot, to send the ball strongly home Chelsea 2-2 Roma. Then, Kolarov sent a cross to Dzeko, who nodded across Chelsea goalie Courtois into the far corner making the score Chelsea 2-3 Roma. Azpilicueta was three yards in front of him and Morata was two yards behind him. At 75 minutes, Pedro clipped a ball into the box and Hazard headed a stunning goal into the bottom corner from 12 yards. Full Time score – 3-3.

Sitting in fifth place on the EPL Table, Chelsea has been having to battlle hard in their quest to defend their Premier League title, but seem to be comfortable in the Champions League Group C group stage qualifiers this season. They soundly defeated Qarabag 6-0 at Stamford Bridge and got all three points away against last year’s runners-up, Atlético Madrid, due to a gold-standard European performance featuring an amazing performance by Eden Hazard’s. Chelsea had Roma to contend with on Wednesday, whose run of 5 victories was stopped by Napoli last weekend in a close game that they lost 1-0. EPL giant club Chelsea lost to minnows Crystal Palace last Saturday and had to work to build confidence for their Champions League game with Roma.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte reported on how thin his Chelsea squad is with 30 players scattered around Europe on loan. Injuries to Victor Moses and N’Golo Kanté were key in Conte’s decision to feature David Luiz in midfield. Former Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko had scored 10 goals in 13 appearances this season going into the clash with Roma. But Chelsea’s prolific striker Álvaro Morata is fit and available again after recovering from a thigh injury. Before the start of the game, Conte talked with the press about the big opportunity the match provides for Chelsea. “After the Qarabag result it’s a big opportunity but you know very well that Roma are a very strong team and it will be a tough game for us. Everyone in this team is well organised and in the team there are very many talented players, Dzeko and Nainggolan are two of these. There are many others,” said Conte. “The problem is that we have to play always the same players. To play two games in seven days you risk injuries. We are pleased to have Alvaro Morata back. It is his first season playing regularly so he is getting used to playing two games in seven days. I’m playing David Luiz because I have two injuries in midfield.” Meanwhile Roma’s manager, Eusebio Di Francesco, had several injury problems. Radja Nainggolan is fit and was the man David Luiz did a good job of keeping in check.
