The home of the FA Cup final
Wembley and the FA Cup final go hand in hand. The old Wembley, with its famous Twin Towers, hosted the final from 1923 until 2000, and the walk up Wembley Way became part of the fixture's folklore. After a spell at Cardiff's Principality Stadium between 2001 and 2006 while the stadium was rebuilt, the final returned to a brand-new Wembley in 2007 and has been played there ever since. For supporters, a trip to the FA Cup final remains one of the great days out in the English game.

Famous FA Cup finals
What sets the FA Cup apart is that every final carries the possibility of an upset. Because hundreds of clubs enter the competition each year and the biggest sides can be drawn against anyone, the final has produced some of the most celebrated underdog stories in football. Here are a few of the finals that capture the magic of the competition.
- Wigan Athletic (2013) – in one of the greatest upsets in the competition's history, Wigan beat Manchester City to win the first major trophy in the club's history, only to be relegated from the Premier League days later.
- Portsmouth (2008) – Portsmouth beat Cardiff City to claim the FA Cup, a rare modern triumph for a club outside the traditional elite.
- Wimbledon (1988) – the famous “Crazy Gang” stunned a Liverpool side chasing the double, one of the most storied giant-killings the final has ever seen.
- West Ham United (1980) – West Ham won the cup as a second-tier club, the last time a side from outside the top flight lifted the trophy.
- Crystal Palace (2025) – Palace beat Manchester City to win the first major trophy in the club's history, a reminder that the FA Cup can still deliver its greatest stories in the modern era.
History
The FA Cup was first played in the 1871-72 season, making it the oldest association football competition in the world. The very first final was contested in 1872, and the trophy quickly became the centrepiece of the English football calendar. Over more than 150 years the final has been staged at grounds including Kennington Oval, Crystal Palace and the old Wembley, before settling at the rebuilt Wembley Stadium in 2007. Today it remains one of the most watched club matches on the planet, followed by hundreds of millions of fans around the world.
Format
The FA Cup is a straight knockout competition open to hundreds of clubs from across the English football pyramid, from Premier League giants to non-league sides. The two teams that win their semi-finals meet in the final at Wembley. If the match is level after 90 minutes, extra time is played, and if the scores are still level, the trophy is decided by a penalty shoot-out. It is single-match, winner-takes-all football at its purest.
Why the FA Cup final matters
The FA Cup final is more than just a trophy. For many clubs it is the biggest day in their history, and for the biggest clubs it is a chance to end the season with silverware and a place in Europe – the winners qualify for the Europa League. It is a day when the whole footballing world watches a single match, and the sense of occasion – the build-up, the walk out at Wembley, the lifting of the trophy – is unlike anything else in the English game. That is exactly why demand for FA Cup final tickets is always so high.
