Man United recovers from derby defeat with win over Everton

Erik ten Hag's Manchester United bounced back from recent defeats to Manchester City and Fulham by securing a crucial 2-0 win against struggling Everton. Alejandro Garnacho, while not on the scoresheet, proved instrumental for United, earning two penalties in the first half.

Key role for Garnacho

The match at Old Trafford saw United take the lead through a penalty after Alejandro Garnacho was brought down inside the box by an Everton player in the 10th minute. Despite Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford guessing the right direction, Bruno Fernandes confidently converted the penalty, giving United the lead.

The spotlight remained on Garnacho as he was pivotal once again in the 35th minute, drawing another foul in the penalty area. This time Marcus Rashford stepped up, and after a stuttering run-up, coolly placed the ball into the bottom left corner, ending his scoring drought since February 1. Rashford's goal marked a return to form after a brief dry spell, having previously found the net three times in four matches.

Everton's lucky with not given third penalty

Everton nearly conceded a third penalty due to a handball incident following another Garnacho move, but the referees deemed it unintentional. Even after Garnacho was substituted, there was a moment in injury time when another penalty seemed imminent for United, but the play was ruled offside.

United's push for European football

With the win, Manchester United continues its pursuit of European football, aiming to overtake Tottenham Hotspur for the fifth spot in the Premier League. The gap is now just three points, although Spurs have a game in hand and face fourth-placed Aston Villa later in the weekend.

This victory not only rejuvenates Manchester United's campaign but also underscores Garnacho's growing influence and importance in Ten Hag's team. As the season progresses, United's European aspirations hang in the balance, with every match and point becoming increasingly crucial.
