History of Manchester United

The Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath formed Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878. In 1880 the team competed in their first recorded match. By 1888 the club had become a founding member of a regional football league called The Combination. With debts of £2,670 the club was served with a winding-up order. Four local businessmen were willing to invest £500 each, in return for a direct interest in running the club and who subsequently changed the name into Manchester United.
