The Premier League relegation battle

With the Premier League passed the half way mark now, it is time to look at the teams who could go down. The teams that are currently fighting the battle to stay up are: Huddersfield, Fulham, Newcastle, Cardiff, Southampton, Burnley and Palace. If Brighton and Bournemouth are not careful, they could also be dragged into it.

Unfortunately for Huddersfield it seems like it’s too late for them and with only 11 points after 22 games, it looks like they will be heading back to the Championship. Wagner left them last week by mutual consent and are manageress for the moment. They have only won two games all season with the last one coming in November. It was a huge achievement for such a small club to get to the Premier League and to survive one season, but it looks like their time will be over.

Fulham are five points off safety and this is something they probably would not have expected after spending over 100 million pounds over the summer. Jokanovic couldn’t sort out his defense who leaked the most goals in the European top 5 leagues. The board decided to replace him with Claudio Ranieri who won the Premier League with Leicester less than three years ago. Even with the new appointment results have not changed that much so far and are still in 19th place.

Newcastle, Cardiff and Southampton are all separated by one point and this weekend Newcastle face Cardiff at home which will be a big 6-point game for both teams. Newcastle have a great manager in Benitez, however, without the proper backing and no reinforcements, they might be looking at another season in the Championship. Cardiffn were expected to go straight back down, but after a shaky start they have had some good results and are out of the relegation zone.

Crystal Palace and Burnely are 4 and 3 points ahead of the relegation zone, although they are very much in the relegation battle as well. Burnely have been struggling after finishing 7th and Sean Dyche needs to get his team back to the force they were last season. When Roy Hodgson took over at Crystal Palace they were in last and it looked like they wouldn’t survive. Nonetheless, after some impressive performances they finished in 11th place. I believe that both Palace and Burnley will be safe, with Newcastle and Southampton joining them.

Predicted teams to be relegated- Huddersfield, Fulham, Cardiff.
