Rivalries
Main Rivals
RC Lens
The “Derby du Nord”, between LOSC and RC Lens, is one of the most emblematic and passionate clashes in French football. This confrontation, much more than a simple football match, reflects a historical and regional rivalry between two cities in northern France, Lille and Lens. The rivalry between LOSC and RC Lens has its roots in the socio-economic and cultural differences between the two cities. On one side, Lille, an urban metropolis and economic center, and on the other, Lens, a city marked by its mining past. These differences have fueled fierce competition both on and off the pitch.
Valenciennes FC
The departmental rivalry between LOSC Lille and Valenciennes FC varies depending on the historical periods, due to whether both clubs are in the same division or not. Sociologically, this rivalry can be explained by the similarities between Valenciennes and RC Lens supporters, sometimes united against their neighbor Lille. However, the identity characteristic of both teams is increasingly less pronounced. This rivalry was dormant between Valenciennes' sporting decline following the OM-VA affair in 1993 and the club's rise to Ligue 1 in 2006.
