The Game

The ball will be fitted with a sensor which can determine force, distance and landing placement to aid in making game decisions. A camera within the ball will also allow for viewing of the ball’s movement from different perspectives, which will also contribute to decision making, as well as providing action shots for TV and VR footage.

With VR home screenings and gaming leagues competing with the live action sport, football clubs will have to pull out the stops to continue to encourage fans to actually attend the match. In line with this the football experience will become a more holistic entertainment event, attracting friends, couples and families, with pre and post-match entertainment and activities, as is popular in other sports including baseball and horse racing.

The rise of the football gaming industry, alongside VR developments in gaming, will enhance football gaming to a new level where an international gaming league will evolve to rival the traditional sport, with fans tuning in to watch the games via VR. The league will appeal to gamers as well as football fans, and will produce gaming stars who will experience the same notoriety as top football players.

VR technology will also be used to support teams in training, with VR training sessions allowing players to run through the match in various different scenarios to prepare for all eventualities and reactions from the opposing team.

Referees will be replaced with AI technology which will view the match from multiple perspectives and compute data to make quick and accurate decisions.

Advertisers will utilise advanced technology to their benefit. Traditional sponsorship and adverts on players’ shirts and around the stadium, will be replaced with digital ads transmitted to TV viewers as appearing on players’ shirts and around the stadium. This will allow advertisers to target very specific audiences, by location and other factors, and will create more advertising income for teams who will be able to work with multiple different brands. Premium prices would be charged for top players, peak match hours, and notable games.
