Man Utd win as Ibra scored 250TH goal since turning 30

Manchester United are still in race for a top 4 finish on EPL Table

Match Report

Sunderland 0-3 Manchester United
Manchester United are still in the fight for a top four finish in the English Premier League this season after defeating a ten-man Sunderland side 3-0 on a hot Sunday at Wearside with goals from Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Marcus Rashford. Sub Rashford was set up for a shot by Ibrahimovic as the England U21 star Rashford rounded up a good day smashing home a fine finish, his 8th of the season, but only his first in the league since September 24th. It is almost six months since Manchester United lost in the league, but they've drawn too many matches, as they climbed from seventh to sixth place on the EPL Table. Rashford scored his first EPL goal since September and Ibrahimovic scored his 250th goal since turning 30. Sunderland's Seb Larsson received a controversial red card just before half-time resulting in the Black Cats being reduced to ten men for the remainder of the game.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he feels like "Benjamin Button" after opening the scoring to break the deadlock in Man United's 3-0 victory against Sunderland. The big Swedish striker struck in the 30th minute before Sunderland's Sebastian Larsson was given his marching orders prior to the break. Manchester United's Henrikh Mkhitaryan made it 2-0 early in the second half before United youngster Marcus Rashford scored the Red Devil's third with minutes to go. Marouane Fellaini wore the captain's armband for Man United in the match. Sergio Romero started in goal as United won without their No 1 keeper David de Gea, who is out with a minor injury that will see him miss the Europa League clash with Anderlecht. But de Gea is likely to be back in time for United's upcoming mouth-watering showdown with Chelsea.

Talking with the media after the game, Ibrahimovic was asked how he is able to stay in form at the age of 35. "I train hard, I keep focusing," said Ibra. "I believe in what I do, I believe in myself and I know what I am able to do and I'm not worried. I just play my game and try to enjoy. It seems the older I get the more intelligent I get, of course I can't move the same as 10 years ago or 5 years ago. But the older you get the more experienced and intelligent you get. You don't waste so much energy on things you don't need. My game is improving, I'm getting better and better, I feel like Benjamin Button, I was born old and I will die young."

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho's side enjoyed a perfect energy-saving warm-up match for Manchester United's Europa League challenge against 10-man strugglers Sunderland who had to play with 10 men for the majority of the match after Seb Larsson was sent off in the first half. United suffered no new injuries and footballers Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw got some positive game time. Jose Mourinho is eyeing Europa League glory, and United's celebrity boss has instructed his men to go all out to win the Europa League silverware after their 21st consecutive Premier League game unbeaten, and ahead of the Red Devil's trip to play Anderlecht on Thursday in the Europa League quarter-final, "I don't want our club to be just happy fighting for top four and Champions League places. I want us fighting for trophies," said Mourinho. "It is the only chance to get a trophy. We won the League Cup and now we will fight for Europa League and we keep fighting for the top four."

Their top-four challenge isn't over, and the rest of this campaign will be tough for Man United as they host Chelsea at Old Trafford next week, followed by a Manchester Derby away at Manchester City, and matches against Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur coming up. Zlatan delivered a powerful trademark strike to open the scoring, using his strength to collect Ander Herrera's pass on the edge of the box. Billy Jones could do little to muscle Ibra away from scoring, and Lamine Kone was too slow as the Swede turned inside to make an angle. Ibra's curling strike was too powerful for Black Cat goalie Jordan Pickford to stop, and was his 28th in all competitions in 43 appearances in the 2016-17 season. In the England Premier League, Ibra has scored 17 goals and 28 goals total for Manchester United to date this season. Sunderland claimed an injustice over Seb Larsson's harsh red card. The Swede was sent off for a studs-up, late challenge on Herrera. Larsson protested furiously to referee Craig Pawson and his assistants saying he wasn't off the ground or out of control. Herrera's decision not to challenge himself, and to pull out, made Larsson's action look worse in the Wearsiders continued fall from grace. It is now 57 days since Sunderland last scored. They've only scored in one of their last 11 Premier League matches dating back to mid-January. Jermain Defoe is six games without a goal for the Black Cats.
