Chelsea Win! Manchester United, Manchester City, and Arsenal Suffer Champions League Opener Defeats

Three out of four Premiership sides lost their opening European matches as Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester lick their wounds and hope to recover from their opening day defeats. Only FC Chelsea won their opening match with four goals and a clean sheet against Maccabi Tel-Aviv, but will go into their next clash well aware of their need to improve if they hope to compete in the quarter-finals and beyond in this edition of the premier football tournament in Europe this season.

Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger stated that he believes the Gunners lost their opening Champions League tie to Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 due in part to a bad call by referee, Ovidiu Hategan. Hategan sent off Olivier Giroud in the 40th minute with a questionable and harsh red card leaving only 10 men.

Dinamo manager, Zoran Mamic, commented that his team’s performance was tactically perfect as they closed the middle and stopped the Gunners fast passes, and concentrated on not letting Arsenals top players get the ball.

Giroud contested being booked with a yellow card in the 24th minute and was soon shown a 2nd card for a clumsy tackle on Ivo Pinto.

Veteran Gunners manager Wenger also claimed Dinamo’s first goal should have been ruled out as offside.

Wenger stated that although his side were a bit unlucky in their opening loss to Dinamo, he remains confident that Arsenal will qualify for the Champions League Knockout Phase for the 16th season in a row.

Arsenal also lost their opening Premiership match at home to West Ham United. The Gunners defeated Stoke City 2-0 on Saturday.

Comng up this weekend Arsenal have a Premier League Derby away at Chelsea.
