Atletico de Madrid made history yesterday as they qualified for their first UEFA Champions League final since 1972 following the 3-1 away victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Atletico will face neighbors Real Madrid in Lisbon on May 24th as it will be the first time two teams from the same city will decide the European’s most prestigious tournament in club football.

The Spanish La Liga current leaders came from behind against Mourinho’s men as Torres opened the scoring in the 36th minute. The striker looked very emotional as he did not celebrate his goal against his childhood team.

But Diego Simeone’s line up surprise, Adrian Lopez, levelled the score just before half time with a strange volley following a rare cross from the right side that neither John Terry nor Ashley Cole or Gary Cahill were able to clear out.

Atletico went down the tunnel at the break with that away goal knowing now it was them who were already qualified for the final and forcing Mourinho to change his defensive tactics.

The Portuguese did so by sending Eto’o in for Ashley Cole but the Cameroon striker was more decisive in his own area as he clumsily brought down Costa and referee Nicola Rizzoli awarded the penalty.

Costa saw the yellow card for time-wasting as he struggled to put the ball still on the spot but had no trouble to send it past Schwarzer and into the net to make it 1-2 in the 60th minute.

Chelsea pushed forward for the equalizer and came close when Luiz’s header bounced back off the crossbar allowing Courtois to somehow divert it to the corner.

The Blues hopes to turn the result around came to an end eighteen minutes from time when Arda Turan tucked the ball into an empty net after grabbing his own effort rebound off the bar.
