Chelsea emerged victorious from the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final, beating Rubin Kazan 3-1 at Stamford Bridge. Fernando Torres put the home side ahead in the 16th minute, and Victor Moses made it two just after the half hour mark. Rubin pulled one back just before half-time. John Terry handled the ball in the area and Natcho converted the spot-kick. Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 FC Basel

Tottenham drew 2-2 with Basel at White Hart Lane, leaving them with a fight on their hands if they are to advance to the Europa League semi-finals. Valentin Stocker put the visitors ahead in the 30th minute, and Fabian Frei doubled their lead five minutes later. Emmanuel Adebayor scored from a superb volley to make it 2-1 five minutes before the break. Both sides had chances early in the second half, but it was Gylfi Sigurdsson who managed to level the game for Spurs, his shot from 22 yards out took a deflection off Schar to find it's way past Sommer. Tottenham's worries about a result in the return fixture will be multiplied after Gareth Bale was stretchered off late in the game.

Benfica 3-1 Newcastle United

Benfica came from behind to run riot over Newcastle United, securing a two-goal advantage in the quarter-final first leg in Lisbon. Papiss Cisse made it 1-0 in the 12th minute, knocking in a Sissoko cross, but former Bolton forward Rodrigo levelled the game 13 minutes later after Krul parried the ball to him. Davide Santon gifted the ball to Lima in the 65th minute, and he put the hosts ahead, and in the 71st minute Benfica were awarded a penalty after the ball struck Taylor's arm in the area. Oscar Cardozo calmly put the ball past Krul to give Newcastle a tough job back at St. James Park.
