Steaua Bucharest 1-0 Chelsea

Chelsea had a tough match at the Steaua Stadium in the first-leg of their Europa League last-16 tie, losing 1-0 to Steaua Bucharest. Chelsea interim manager Rafa Benitez saw his side go down to a 34th minute penalty. Ryan Bertrand had a tussle with Steaua's Raul Rusescu while they were trying defend a cross from Latovlevici. The referee awarded a penalty and Rusescu made sure the spot-kick counted. The home side seemed to dominate the second-half but great defending from Petr Cech and John Terry gave Chelsea a glimmer of hope for the second-leg at Stamford Bridge next week.

Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Inter Milan

The home fans watching at White Hart Lane went home happy after seeing their side thrash Italian giants Inter Milan 3-0. Spurs will go into the second-leg of their Europa League last-16 tie with a considerable advantage and full of confidence after this commanding performance. Gareth Bale put the home side ahead in the 6th minute, heading in a cross from Gylfi Sigurdsson. Sigurdsson doubled their lead 12 minutes later after gathering the rebound from Jermain Defoe's shot. Inter had trouble getting to grips with the Spurs midfield, and the pace from Bale and Defoe was a problem. Jan Vertonghen grabbed a third 8 minutes after the restart, heading in a corner delivered by Bale. The win means they are almost certain to advance to the quarter-finals.

Anzhi Makhachkala 0-0 Newcastle United

A solid defensive performance from Newcastle was enough to grind out a 0-0 draw against Anzhi Makhachkala. The match was played at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow after security concerns in the surrounding region of Anzhi's ground in Dagestan. The cold conditions didn't help, and the only exciting attempt on goal in a dull first-half came from Samuel Eto'o, his long-range shot testing Rob Elliot. Both teams picked up the pace in the second-half, Eto'o going close again and Hatem Ben Arfa hitting the ball superbly but straight at the keeper. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew will be pleased with his sides performance and hope that they can get a victory back at St.James' Park.
