World Cup Qualifiers: England 1-1 Ukraine

Frank Lampard saved the day for England, scoring a late penalty to earn a draw against Ukraine at Wembley. In a match that saw England, listed as third best international team in the new FIFA rankings, struggle to keep up with the Ukranians, they were lucky to emerge with a draw and saw the end of the match out with only ten men, after Steven Gerrard was sent off for his second bookable offence.

The Ukranians went ahead in the 38th minute after Evhen Konoplyanka scored a speactacular goal for the visitors. They went into the half time break with a one goal lead. They kept up the pressure in the second half, but England started to find their feet and Glen Johnson's runs from right back worried the visitors and Welbeck had a shot that hit the post. Cleverley also squandered some opportunities before seeing one of his shots also hit the woodwork. England's penalty in the 87th minute came after Yevgen Khacherdi handled the ball while Welbeck was on a forward run. Frank Lampard stepped up to take the spot kick and pull the game back to 1-1. Gerrard was finally dismissed after hacking down Denys Garmash a minute after England's equaliser. His second yellow card, following his first for an elbowing offence earlier in the half, means he will miss the match against San Marino next month.
