World Cup 2022 Group A preview
We know it’s a bit early, but in June, we get World Cup vibes. Normally the World Cup would be played around this stage, so we thought lets look forward to this exciting tournament in winter of 2022. Therefore we decided to do an early preview on the group stages. To start with Group A. In this article we discuss all teams in Group A. This is an interesting group with of course the home nation.
Qatar is the odd duck in this group. It’s the home nation so they were secured of a spot in the tournament. It’s the first time they will play a World Cup and nobody really knows what to expect from Qatar. This isn’t the strongest group, so Qatar might be able to cause a shock in this tournament.
Ecuador is the second team in Group A. Ecuador qualified for the World Cup after finishing fourth in the South American group. There is however a small change they will miss out on the World Cup, since there is an ineligible player used by the Ecuadorian football federation (FEF) during World Cup qualifying. It will be interesting to see if FIFA is going to do anything about this, or leaves Ecuador play in the World Cup.
The Netherlands won their group stage during the World Cup qualification tournament. They’ve got the honor to face Qatar during the opener of this tournament. Louis van Gaal’s team has some world class players in it. They will be favourite to win this group stage and progress to the knockout stages.
The current African champion Senegal is the final team in this group stage. That doesn’t mean they are the worst team. With a strong squad they should be able to compete for the first two spots in this group. There is a serious chance Senegal will continu to the next stage.
