Mexico and USA join Canada as Concacaf teams on World Cup 20
Earlier we wrote about the special moment when Canada qualified for the second time in their history for the World Cup tournament. The Canadians played an outstanding qualification tournament and probably have the best squad in their history. But there was still place for at least two more teams from CONCACAF. In the middle of the night the last qualification matches have been played in North and Central America and the Caribbean. In this article we discuss the teams that joined Canada in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.
Mexico is one of the CONCACAF teams with the most World Cup participations. They’ve played every single World Cup tournament since 1994. It could have been since 1986, but they were banned from the 1990 tournament because of the Cachirules scandal. Now they qualified for their eight consecutive tournament. Which will be at least 9 consecutive participations since Mexico is already qualified for the 2026 tournament as co-host. Mexico was in a good position before the last qualification match, but they got an easy victory against El Salvador. With a 2-0 victory, Mexico finished second in the group. Mexico has a strong squad, with Raul Jimenez and Edson Alvarez as big stars. Do you want to watch Mexico live in Qatar in the winter of 2022? Book your here!
United Stated played an important match against Costa Rica. Costa Rica was the only team that potentially could steal the final direct spot for the World Cup 2022 away from the United States. A big victory by Costa Rica could mean they overtake United States on goal difference. Even though they tried, Costa Rica didn’t score more than 2 goals. A 2-0 victory isn’t enough for them to finish in the top 3. Thanks to this result, United States qualified for the World Cup. Costa Rica now faces New Zealand in an inter-confederation play-off.
