Manchester City road to the Community Shield

The Beatles used to sing about the long and winding road. Something it was for Manchester City. The long and winding road to the Community Shield. In this article we look back at Manchester City’s journey during the 2020-2021 Premier League season.

Off to a rocky start

2020-2021 was a very special season. The Coronavirus extended the season before and therefore delayed the start of the 2020-2021 season. Nevertheless, Manchester City didn’t look ready at the start of the season. After winning the first match with 3-1 against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Cityzens lost 5-2 at home versus Leicester City. In the five following games, they drew 3 times with 1-1 and won 2 with only 1-0. Then Tottenham Hotspur won with 2-0, leaving Man City on only 12 points after 8 games. Two must win games against Fulham and Burnley were won, followed by 2 draws against Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion. Manchester City collected 20 points in their first eleven games, leaving them on a 9th place.

15 consecutive wins

In the games after drawing with West Bromwich Albion it all clicked for Manchester City. They went on a run of 15 consecutive wins in the Premier League. The run started with a 0-1 victory over Southampton in December and went all the way into March when the beat Wolverhampton Wanderers with 4-1. A run that was enough for Man City to create a decisive gap on the table. They went from 9th to 1st with a gap of 14 points over Manchester United.

End of the season

Manchester United immediately reduced the gap with 3 points by beating Man City at the Etihad Stadium. A result that didn’t stop Man City in their titlerace. They kept on winning most of their games. They won the Premier League with a 12 points advantage over Manchester United. This brings them back into the Community Shield, where they will face Leicester City.
