Manchester City goes for Carabao Cup hat-trick

Aston Villa was the first team to qualify for the 2020 Carabao Cup final. The Villans won the semi-final tie with Leicester City in the dying seconds of the second leg. The second semi-final was the Manchester derby between Manchester City and Manchester United. Manchester City took a big lead in the first leg after winning the match with 3-1. With the quality they’ve got in the team and the second match at their own home, Cityzens felt very confident they could go back to Wembley for the Carabao Cup final.

The second match of this semi-final tie was a somewhat strange match. Manchester city dominated possession from the start of the match. David de Gea was forced to make some important stage very early in the match. Out of the blue it was Nemanja Matic who opened the score in this Manchester derby on Wednesday evening. Since there is no away goal rule in the Carabao Cup, Manchester United needed to score one more goal to force a penalty shoot-out. Nevertheless it was Manchester City who dominated the entire match, but they failed to put the ball in the goal behind De Gea.

Halfway the second half, goalscorer Matic was sent off after getting his second yellow card. This made the task even harder for United. Aguero looked to score the deciding equalizer, but his goal was cancelled due to the offside rule. Even though Man United tried to force a penalty shootout with 10 men, the 0-1 score remained, and Manchester City qualified for another Carabao Cup final. This is their opportunity to win this trophy for the third time in a row. Liverpool is the only team so far that managed to keep the trophy for at least 3 years. Can Man City do the same?
