Community shield recap

Manchester City were victorious in Sunday’s Community Shield against Liverpool. They had to win on penalties in order to win their first trophy of the season. The Community Shield is not regarded as a “real” trophy, but it is still a psychological boost for City as they were able to get one over their rivals, even though the match was tight, and the two teams could not be separated after 90 minutes.

City started the match the better of the two sides and got a goal on the 12th minute when Liverpool fell asleep from a free-kick and Silva broke the offside trap to head it to a free Sterling who tapped it past Alisson. Liverpool’s defense seemed a bit shaky, and there were a few mistakes that were occurring. However, even though City were dominant the rest of the half they could not get another goal.

Liverpool came out much stronger in the second half, and Salah, who had only had 30 minutes of a pre-season match prior, looked very sharp. He tested Bravo various times trying to get in his near post but could not break through. In the 55th minute, Van Dijk received the ball on the edge of the 6-yard box and headed it onto the post and it looked like it crossed the line, but the goal was not given as the whole ball did not cross. The Liverpool faithful remembered how the ball was 11mm from crossing the line in the match the two teams played back in January which was their only loss of the season. It looked like it wouldn’t be Liverpool’s day again, but in the 77th minute, Van Dijk leaped at the far post to head the ball back into the danger zone which is met by Matip who equalized. Liverpool had a couple of more chances the in the game outright, however, could not get past Bravo.

The match went to penalties, with everyone except Wijnaldum scoring, meaning that City were victorious. It was a bit of a tough defeat to take for Liverpool, but it shows that they will push City again for the title this season.
