Uefa Super Cup Chelsea v Liverpool

This will be the first time that the Uefa Super Cup, which is played between the winner of the Champions League and the winner of the Europa League will be an all English affair. Four out of the last five Super Cups have been all Spanish affairs, so it is nice to see another country represent both teams. The match will be played between Liverpool and Chelsea as they won their respective competitions.

Liverpool beat Tottenham last weekend in the Champions League final to be crowned kings of Europe for the 6th time. It was quite an underwhelming final, but Klopp and his men will not care as they were victorious. This will be the first time Liverpool are competing in this competition since 2005 and they will be looking to win it for the fourth time.

Chelsea, on the other hand, beat Arsenal in the Europa League final 4-1. Hazard stole the show scoring twice and assisting once, in his last match for Chelsea as they have accepted a 100 million euro bid from Real Madrid for his services. Chelsea played in the Super Cup two years in a row in 2012 and 2013 after they won the Champions League and the Europe League the following year. They did not win the Super Cup in either of those years and only won it once which was way back in 1998.

Winning the Champions League does not guarantee that you will win the Super Cup as we saw last year when Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid 4-2 in extra time. The match will be played on Wednesday 14 August a few days after the opening weekend of the Premier League season. The match will be played in Istanbul, which is the city where Liverpool had their most famous Champions League night, even though it won’t be in the same stadium.
