English Community Shield Liverpool v Manchester City

The Community Shield is usually played between the winner of the league and the winner of the FA Cup. This season, Manchester City won both the league and the FA Cup and therefore the second-placed league team, which in this case was Liverpool will face the champions Manchester City. This will be the first game of the English domestic season which will reignite the City and Liverpool rivalry from last season as it was one of the most exciting and closely contested title races in recent years. The two teams will come into the match as favorites for the Premier League title, even though City will be slightly more favoured. This will also depend on who the two teams sign over the summer.

The last time the two teams faced each other was in January when Manchester City won the match 2-1. This was Liverpool’s only Premier League defeat of the season and many said it is the reason why they did not win the league. If they would have won that match, they would have been 10 points ahead of Manchester City. But that is all hindsight and it is hard to speculate what would have happened.

This match will be a good indicator of how the season will go and who will be the more dominant team. Liverpool have won this trophy 10 times whereas City have won it five times. Last season Manchester City beat Chelsea in the Community Shield final, winning 2-0 with Aguero getting both goals. This will be Liverpool’s first appearance since 2006.

The Community Shield is expected to take place on the 4th of August, one week before the Premier League season commences, but there has not been an official confirmation from the FA yet.
