FC Barcelona are on course for another treble
FC Barcelona have previously won the treble twice. Once in Guardiola’s first season in charge, 2009, which is considered as the start of the Pep dominance. Their second treble came in 2015 when Enrique was in charge and now, they have the chance to do it for the third time. Barcelona have already wrapped up Laliga two weeks ago and are able to focus on the Champions League and the Copa del Rey final. They played their first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Liverpool last week, which they won 3-0 in emphatic style. Suarez got his first goal of the Champions League season, but it was Messi who stole the show with two goals, one being a tremendous free-kick from 35 yards out. Bar a crazy comeback from Liverpool they should be set for the final against Ajax or Tottenham.
Barcelona didn’t have the best of seasons last year, even though they won the domestic double. They haven’t made it passed the quart-final stage of the Champions League since they won it in 2015, being kicked out by Atletico, Juventus, and Roma respectively. It was particularly disappointing how they got knocked out last season by Roma, after winning the first leg 4-1. This year the squad seems much more determined in the Champions League and especially Messi seems that he wants to get one better over his rival Ronaldo after he won the previous three editions.
The Copa Del Rey final is a week after the end of the Spanish League season which is against Valencia. Both games they have played this season have ended in draws and Barcelona will hope that Valencia is not their bogey team this season. Valverde is making sure that his players are fit a fresh for their important matches and therefore has been playing more of a “B team” in the league. If Barcelona do make it to the Champions League final on the 1st of June, which they almost certainly will, it will prove to be a very long season. However, I am sure none of the players will complain if they win a treble.
