Champions League recap

The second round of second leg Champions League matches were played this week. The comeback trend continued when Juventus met Atletico Madrid after having lost the first game 2-0. Juventus thought the took the lead early only for the goal to be ruled out be VAR. Atletico were quite poor on the night and Ronaldo stepped up and scored a towering header on the 27th minute. Ronaldo scored his second after a cross from Cancelo that looked like Oblak had saved, however, it had crossed the line. Ronaldo completed his hattrick with a late penalty and send Juventus to the quarterfinals.

The second game on Tuesday was much more straight forward. Manchester City faced Schalke after winning the first leg 2-3. Schalke are currently 14th in the Bundesliga and not having the best of seasons. They were absolutely destroyed in the match and the game was over in the first half. The match finished 7-0 and 10-2 overall aggregate which will give City loads of confidence.

On Wednesday Bayern hosted Liverpool after the first game ended 0-0. Liverpool took the lead after a great ball from Van Dijk and a great goal from Mane. Bayern got a goal back by an own goal from Matip but that was their only dominant spell in the match. Liverpool played very well defensively and did not give Bayern much space to create chances. Van Dijk got his goal from a corner and Mane finished it off in the 84th Minute to seal their quarter-final place and give Liverpool a famous victory over Bayern.

The final game was between Barcelona and Lyon with the first leg also finishing 0-0. Barcelona took a 2-0 lead in the first half, however, early in the second half Lyon got a goal back and it made things a little nervy for Barcelona. Barcelona scored three more goals in the last 12 minutes to put the game to bed. There was not much doubt that Barcelona were going to go through, and Messi was brilliant on the night.
