The effect of Chelsea's big loss

Manchester City demolished Chelsea 6-0 on the weekend. This was a crushing defeat and with the two sides having to play each other again in two weeks in the EFL Cup final, does this result have a big influence on how the final will end? The answer, in short, is yes. This sort of defeat, which is Chelsea’s heaviest defeat in the Premier League, definitely would have a negative effect on confidence as the players will have this match fresh in their minds coming into the final.

Chelsea were completely outplayed on Sunday and it took City only four minutes to score the first goal. It was quite a sloppy goal defensively, as Chelsea fell asleep, City took a quick free kick, put it into the box and Sterling got to the end of it. This opened the floodgates and by the time the game passed the 25th-minute mark, City were already 4-0 up. City could have even been further ahead if Aguero didn’t miss a tap in from 3 yards out. Aguero did make up for it though by scoring a screamer, and then getting lucky with Barkley trying to head the ball back to the keeper but instead headered it right into Aguero's path to score his second. He Completed his hattrick in the second half with a penalty, and then Sterling scored his second of the game and City’s 6th in the 80th minute.

There was a real gap in class between the two teams on Sunday and Sarri will be worried that Chelsea have lost their last three away games without even scoring a goal. Chelsea’s next game is away to Malmo in the Europa League, which is then followed by a game at home to Manchester United in the FA Cup. They will be hoping to put in two good performances to boost their confidence and gain some from before the EFL Cup final the following Sunday.

City, on the other hand, have easier fixtures, as the first face Newport County in the FA Cup, which is then followed by facing Schalke in the Champions League. The game against Chelsea will surely have boosted their confidence and these next two games City will expect to win after the form they have been in.
