Can PSG be stopped?

PSG are strolling through Ligue 1 this season as they have for the past couple of seasons. They are currently 13 points ahead of Lille in second with two games in hand. They just beat Guingamp 9-0, and even though they are last in the table it is a huge win, especially after they lost to them in the cup last week, which is their only loss of the season so far. In Ligue 1 they have won all but two of their matches in which they drew. They have a goals difference of 52 which to put into perspective Lille in second place have a goal difference of 13. This really shows the big gap there is between PSG and the rest of the league.

Monaco was the only team that was able to challenge PSG recently, however, they are having a terrible season and are sitting in 19th place. PSG’s main aim is to win the Champions League, as Ligue 1 is pretty much wrapped up already. They have a very strong squad with their front three of Neymar, Mbappe, and Cavani the most prolific in Europe’s top 5 leagues but their midfield is not as solid, but it is something they are looking to improve. PSG haven’t got passed the quarter final stage of the Champions League since their new ownership and they face Manchester United in the round of 16. PSG will be hoping that United’s new-found spirit will hinder their chances of going through.

Teams in Ligue 1 need to take notice of what Guingamp did in the cup and how they beat PSG. If not, then PSG will just dominate France for years to come and it will not be interesting anymore. It’s like Juventus in Italy, Italian football has been in decline since Juventus became so powerful and the other teams were not able to challenge them. It is hard for the lower teams in France to compete with the money that PSG have, but Monaco, Marseille and Lyon all spent on reinforcements during the summer. Something needs to be done though top make the French league more exciting and competitive again so that it doesn’t lose its appeal to foreign fans.
