2023-2024 FA Cup tournament

The first weekend of November was the official start of the 2023-2024 FA Cup tournament. The tournament will end of the first of June with the final at Wembley.

Fa cup history

The FA Cup or Football Association Challenge Cup is an English knockout tournament. The competition began in the 1871-72 season and is the oldest ongoing football tournament in the world. The cup is named after the English Football Association (FA). For sponsorship reasons the tournament gets another name occasionally, at this moment it’s officially called the Emirates FA Cup. Participation is open to all football clubs in the top 10 levels of England league football. This means that several 100 teams participate in the tournament. The current record stands from season 2011-2012, in which 763 competed in the FA Cup. The tournament has been suspended between 1914-1915 until 1919-1920 and between 1938-1939 and 1945-1946 due to World War 1 and 2. So the 2018-2019 edition in the 138th time the FA Cup is played. The draw decides which team plays at home during this tournament until the quarter finals. The semi-finals and final are all played at Wembley. The semi-final weekend is always something special. Two matches in two days at the beautiful Wembley stadium. It doesn’t get much better than this. The winner of the FA Cup gets automatically qualified for the upcoming Europa League tournament. One of the most shocking moments in the FA Cup history is the incident happened in the match between Tottenham Hotspur and Bolton Wanderers in March 2012. This fifth-round tie was almost halfway when Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the pitch. Eventually he survived but, following medical advice, he announced his retirement in August 2012.

FA cup wins & trophies

Arsenal holds the record for the most FA Cup wins. The Gunners have won the FA Cup tournament 14 times, Man United is second with 12 wins. Tottenham Hotspur have earned the trophy 8 times in 9 FA Cup final appearances. FC Liverpool, Chelsea has won the cup 8 times each. The first FA Cup Semi-Final played at Wembley was in 1991 as the Spurs challenged the Gunners in a North London Derby - a wonderful Paul Gascoigne free-kick gave Tottenham a 3-1 victory. The semi-finals became a fixture at London’s stunning Wembley Stadium when it reopened for the 2007-08 campaign. This takes away the home team advantage in the semi-finals. Both teams get the same amount of tickets for this match, which gives every semi-finalist equal circumstances. Hull v Sheffield United broke the record for the highest scoring FA Cup game in Wembley history with a 5-3 epic cup clash.

Records

The FA Cup is the longest ongoing football tournament in the world. It’s inevitable that there are a lot of records in a long-lasting tournament like this. Arsenal is a team with many records on their name. The 2017 final was their 21st appearance in a FA Cup final. There is no other team which played this many FA Cup finals. Manchester United is second on this list with 20 finals played. It’s by no means a surprise that these two teams both are on top of the winners list. Both rivals won the FA Cup 12 times until 2016, but Arsenal went one up, by winning the cup in 2017. Leicester City is probably the unluckiest team in the FA Cup history. The Foxes played four finals, but never won the tournament. No other team failed to win the tournament after playing four finals. Everton is the team with the most lost finals, they lost the final 8 times. But the Toffees also won the tournament on five occasions. On the other side, we have the Wanderers. They played 5 finals between 1872 and 1878 and won all five of them. This is an achievement which haven’t been reproduced ever since. Wanderers is also the first ever team to win the FA Cup final.

Player records

Some of the biggest stars in the history of football have played in this amazing cup tournament. Ashley Cole has an amazing record with a whopping number of 7 finals wins out of 8 final appearances. There are just three teams (Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur) who won the FA Cup more than Ashley Cole did. The English fullback won the cup three times with Arsenal and 4 times with Chelsea. There is no doubt Cole is Mr. FA Cup. Arthur Kinnaird played one final more than Cole, but only won the tournament five times. Ian Rush is the all-time FA Cup final top scorer. He scored 5 goals in finals. Didier Drogba is the player who scored in the most finals (4 times).

Curton Weston is the youngest player ever to compete in the FA Cup final. The English player was 17 years old and 119 days old when he played the final at Wembley. He lost with Milwall 3-0 against Manchester United, but it was still a special day for him. Billy Hampson is till date the oldest player to play the FA Cup final. He was 41 years and 257 days when he played the final in 1924.

Wembley

In 1923 the first FA Cup final was played at Wembley Stadium. Bolton Wanderers defeated West Ham United with 2-0. In 1999-2000 Chelsea defeated Aston Villa with 1-0 in the last final at the original Wembley Stadium. The original stadium was demolished from 2002-2003 and the FA Cup final temporarily switched to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. In 2007, the FA opened the new Wembley Stadium with a capacity of 90,000 seats. The Stadium is owned by the governing body of English football the FA. The FA headquarters are therefore based in the Wembley Stadium. After playing the last final in the old stadium, Chelsea also played the first ever final in the new Wembley Stadium. On 19 May 2007 Chelsea battled Manchester United for the trophy. Didier Drogba scored the first goal in this new venue which appeared to become the only goal in this match. Chelsea won the FA Cup final in the new with 1-0. So far, the new Wembley Stadium hosted 10 FA Cup finals with 23 goals. None of the finals so far has gone all the way to penalties to declare a winner.
