Match Report

Europa League Quarter-final second leg: Manchester United 2-1 RSC Anderlecht (agg 3-2) after extra time On Thursday April 20th, Manchester United defeated Anderlecht 1-1 (agg 3-2) with Red Devil’s goals by Mkhitaryan 10’min and Rashford 107’min to move on to the Europa League semi-finals. Anderlecht’s only goal was by Hanni 32’min. United won the tie despite Leander Dendoncker’s late equalizer denying the Red Devils a win in the 1-1 opening leg. Marcus Rashford scored an extra-time winner to send Manchester United into the last four, but Swedish celeb striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffered a potentially serious injury. “Giving up is not an option”: Zlatan Ibrahimovic vowed to return from injury as soon as possible, but the superstar striker said he will be “out for awhile”. Ibra said he will “come back stronger” from the knee injury he suffered in Manchester United’s second leg Europa League win against Belgium leaders Anderlecht.

Squads

Manchester United

Man of the Match Marcus Rashford scored his first goal in European competition since scoring against Midtjylland on his Man Utd debut in February 2016. Rashford'skey extra-time goal sent Man United into the Europa League semi-final as Anderlecht exited on a night of high energy and suspense at Old Trafford. Youngster Marcus Rashford has had a hand in four goals in his past four appearances for Man United as many as in his previous 33 combined, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan has scored in five of his past six Europa League games. Mkhitaryan has scored in three successive appearances for Manchester Utd for the second time this season.

United opened the match scoring when Henrikh Mkhitaryan drilled in a low finish in the 10th minute, but Anderlecht came back when Sofiane Hanni sent home an equalizer after 32 minutes. Mourinho's side missed a series of chances, and defender Marcos Rojo suffered an injury in the first half, followed by a serious-looking knee injury to the clubs top goal scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the end of normal time. United were facing the prospect of a penalty shootout when Marcus Rashford scored the winner after 107 minutes with a brilliant turn and finish from Marouane Fellaini's assist. Rashford, Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba were all guilty of bad misses as the flaw that kept Anderlecht in contention right until the final whistle in extra time. United celebrated another step towards winning the Europa League and the Champions League place that comes with it.

The win was expensive for Mourinho as the season reaches its climax with the biggest concern Ibrahimovic’s injury, whose knee gave way as he challenged for a high ball in the final moments of normal time. He managed to get to his feet and wave away the waiting stretcher but was helped off as he limped down the tunnel at the Stretford End. Ibra’s inspiration and influence this season have been massive and United will nervously await the medical update. The loss of Ibrahimovic would be a setback of major significance after his 28 goals this season. There is also major concern about the injury to Rojo that saw the central defender taken off on a stretcher in the first half. He had received lengthy treatment previously before collapsing in a second challenge. United are already without injured central defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

Mourinho was appointed United manager with the express intention of bringing additional silverware to Old Trafford, and also putting the club back in the Champions League. With the fight of the titan clubs for a top four finish in the Premier League so tight and with United facing tough trips to Manchester City and Arsenal in the run-in, the Europa League provides a welcome safety net. Manchester United go into Thursday’s 174th derby against Manchester City knowing victory at the Etihad Stadium will take them past Pep Guardiola’s side into fourth place. Mourinho suggested winning the Europa League is a preferable route for United into the Champions League. “If we beat Celta we go to the final and, yes, it is important to us to play in the Champions League but this club wants trophies. We have 25 percent chance to win the Europa Leagues,” said Mourinho.

Mourinho inspired Martial to up his performance level and after the match he said: “Yes, it was very good. With the ball, without the ball, in the middle of two strong central midfielders, without anyone behind him because we had no No10.” Mourinho asked Chris Smalling and Phil Jones to hurry back from injury and be available for the Manchester Derby against Manchester City on Thursday. “Eric Bailly was incredible. If I was Smalling or Jones, I would play Thursday. I wouldn’t accept one guy to play nine matches in a row because I am injured,” said Mourinho. “If they have a crazy mentality like I have they can play. If they are safe thinking and are surrounded by people with the mentality they have, it is more time.”

On 90 minutes Paul Pogba was replaced by Michael Carrick. “I don’t know if he is injured or just super-accumulation of fatigue in the muscles,” said Mourinho. “If he cannot play Thursday, he cannot play and we play another one.’ “We don’t cry, like today. We cry because we have two important injuries, two important surgeries and periods of recovering and we feel for our friends,” said Mourinho referring to the serious knee injuries suffered by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo. “I just think about them and like everybody I’m really sad.” A crucial victory in the Europa League semi-finals offers United manager Jose Mourinho a potential road to the Champions League, away from the Premier League battle for a top-four spot.
