Premier League week 4 news: Man City wins Manchester derby

Manchester City defeat Manchester United 2-1 in the Manchester Derby to go on top of the Premier League Table

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring for City in the Manchester Derby on Saturday at Old Trafford. Pep Guardiola’s new goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who replaced Joe Hart, gifted a goal to Swedish United celebrity striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic after De Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho had put City 2-0 up. On his controversial debut, Bravo fumbled a cross late in the second half, allowing United to score their only goal in the match as the ball dropped to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who sent the ball into the back of the net.

New Man United boss Jose Mourinho was critical of his players after their defeat at home by Manchester City when some of the United players failed to recover from falling two goals behind to Pep Guardiola’s City within the first 36 minutes, eventually losing the game 2-1 as Henrikh Mkhitaryan struggled on his full Manchester United debut. Mourinho remarked that referee Mark Clattenburg had denied his team two crucial penalties that changed the course of the game.

“Some of the boys felt the dimension of the game and everything around it, the derby, the game, the focus of attention. Some of the guys, they felt it. It is nothing to do with experience and age. The kid, Marcus Rashford, who came on at half-time, looks like he is playing for the Under-18s against Salford City. Every individual reacts to demands of the occasion in different ways,” said Mourinho. “It gets easier when you know the players well. You see how they react. Probably in the next big Premier League game I will know who can accept the dimension of the game, which is important.”

“We were losing the ball so easily and their pressing meant we were never able to bring the defensive line up,” added Mourinho. “I didn’t change the team after 20 minutes because I don’t want to destroy the players. I didn’t want to make three changes at half-time but if there were a free number of changes and changes during the first half were normal - I would have done it after 20 minutes.”

“It was not just about them. Other players were not playing really well and obviously it is always my decision. I don’t like to go in the direction of the players and single them out. Lots of our team didn’t play well in the first half and that responsibility is my responsibility,” continued Mourinho. “I told them at half time, ‘Some of you are trying to do what I told you not to do’.” Mourinho said that Clattenburg has “punished” United by failing to give a penalty against Bravo for a foul on Wayne Rooney and also for a Nicolas Otamendi handball.

“The reality is that the penalty and red card for Bravo - we are talking about a completely different match. We were punished by a bad first half and we were punished by Mark. That’s football.” Pep Guardiola said he was glad Bravo carried on taking the kind of risks he wanted him to take even after Bravo’s mistake giving United their only goal as the Spaniard celebrated victory in his first Manchester Derby. “Sometimes when that happens maybe the player can think ‘It is my fault’,” Guardiola said. “Instead Claudio said, ‘Okay it's football. We were unlucky. The situation is unlucky. In that moment in the second half, look what he did: he played again and again with the ball. I know it's a risk. If we lose the ball it is a goal against us but when we win with that, we win many, many, many things.”

City boss Pep Guardiola claimed goalie Bravo had 'one of the best performances' he's seen as his new goalkeeper passed the ball short to a team-mate at every opportunity to provide opportunity for extra possession. 'Until my last day in England I will try to play with the ball as much as possible,' said Pep. 'I know it's impossible for 90 minutes but, I'm sorry, I will not negotiate that.' Had referee Mark Clattenburg awarded a penalty and sent off Bravo when he lost control of the ball and lunged into a two-footed challenge on Wayne Rooney in the second half, it could have been a very different outcome. Bravo also lunged studs-up into Wayne Rooney but was not penalized

After Guardiola praised thirty-three year old Chile international Bravo for 'one of the best performances I've ever seen', Bravo replied that he was 'happy with my first week, with the work I have done'. Man United went into the Derby with a perfect record in the England Premier League this season and many supporters were surprised that Mourinho changed his winning formula. The Portuguese had started Juan Mata and Anthony Martial in all three league games prior to the Manchester Derby, but decided to drop them for Mkhitaryan and Lingard. Mourinho changed his tactics bringing Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera on after half-time. Jose Mourinho said that Marcus Rashford will start against Feyenoord on Thursday saying the teenager has the “big personality” some of his United team-mates lack. Mourinho accused some players of being overwhelmed in the Derby against City, and the Portuguese is expected to wield the axe giving other footballers an opportunity to shine. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Jesse Lingard, Daley Blind and Marouane Fellaini are all expected to be dropped from the Europa League match, and Mourinho will likely draft Rashford and Ander Herrera. Portugese manager Jose Mourinhoo was asked if Rashford could handle a big Europa League match.

“Exactly. For me, the next big game is against Feyenoord and Rashford is going to play. I trust him completely. I know his future will be absolutely brilliant. He is mainly a No. 9 but, if you want to play him in different positions, we need to improve him, but his big personality is there,” replied Mourinho. “Normally people look to the football talent but the personality at this level is very important and he was showing that immediately. Rashford can play as a wide man or we play with both him and Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front, which we can do perfectly like we did against Hull City. I felt City had fragility on the sides and the kid could give us in the second half what we didn’t get from Micki and Jesse in the first half.”

Media asked Mourinho if some players will fear for their places. “The performances are the deciding factor. Performances are the only way that I can decide. So if you are asking me if they are going to play against Feyenoord, then no. And it is not to punish them, it is just to decide in relation to what I have and what do I have? Their performances? So, of course, I am going to play other players.”

“You never know the way players are going to react, especially when you don’t know them so well and, after only a couple of months, it is too early to know them really well. Let’s speak for example about Mkhitaryan, how many big matches has he played? The kid Jesse, how many times has he played big matches? But Ander Herrera came on and he was phenomenal in his attitude.”

Joe Hart’s replacement Claudio Bravo made his debut for Manchester City. Mourinho believes Chilean Man City goalie Bravo received unwarranted protection from officials on Saturday. Mourinho reportedly is furious that referee Clattenburg did not award United a penalty and send off Bravo for a lunge at United skipper Wayne Rooney in the second half after Bravo was put under huge pressure by Rooney. “Well it’s a risk but if you can tackle the way he did and you are not going to give away a penalty or get a red card then you feel a bit safer because it was a penalty and a red card,” Mourinho said. “Clattenburg was five metres away and he doesn’t give the penalty and the red cards – it shows how beautiful football is. But it is always against me!”

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola praised Claudio Bravo's performance after the match even though the Chilean goalkeeper made several big errors, including a dropped cross which led to United's goal.
