England Euro 2016 update

England manager Roy Hodgson is in a delightful dilemma over choosing his Euro 2016 squad with great options of some of the finest football players in England’s history including England captain Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Joe Hart, and Dele Alli. Starting on May 22, 2016, Hodgson will have some International Friendly matches with Turkey, Australia, and Portugal to prepare his side for the Euro 2016 matches that begin for England on June 11, 2016 when they play Russia at Velodrome Marseille in France.

Then on June 16th arch-rivals England and Wales will clash at Stade Felix Bollaert in Lens, France; and on June 20th Slovakia and England will battle at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard at Saint-Etienne, France. England has six or seven strikers who could possibly make the squad – Sturridge, Vardy, Kane, Welbeck, Rashford, Carroll, and Rooney. Here is a possible line-up that Hodgson may choose to take to France in June to play in England’s opening match with Russia in hopes of winning the European Championship and bringing home the coveted trophy.

Potential England Euro 2016 Squad

Goalkeepers

Hart, Forster, Heaton

Full-backs

Clyne, Walker, Rose, Bertrand

Center-backs

Smalling, Cahill, Stones

Midfield

Henderson, Lallana, Dier, Sterling. Milner, Alli, Barkley, Drinkwater

Strikers

Sturridge, Kane, Vardy, Welbeck, Rooney (Carroll, Rashford)

The actual composition of Hodgson’s 23-man England squad is a guessing game however until after the three upcoming friendlies before the Euro 2016 main event starts. The England squad is fairly obvious except for the options Hodgson has for strikers with talents the likes of experienced Wayne Rooney; alongside newer hotshots on the block Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, and Jamie Vardy to choose from.

Manchester United and England Captain Wayne Rooney is expected to play the role of senior pro providing key knowledge and the knowhow to keep his teammates on the right track. Rooney’s positive influence and value to the squad as a captain is unquestioned, with 109 caps to his credit. Sixty-eight year old England boss, Hodgson, is surely qualified to provide all the off-field expertise his side requires.

Hodgson however has been hinting at leaving a defender behind to accommodate five strikers, and reportedly planning for a Jack Wilshere recovery. Chris Smalling, Gary Cahill and John Stones will be counted to manage the central defense positions, while Luke Shaw will miss out through injury. England full-back choices are Ryan Bertrand, Leighton Baines and Danny Rose.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson hopes to recover from a knee ligament injury in time. Adam Lallana, and James Milner are dependable and seem fit for action. Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Ross Barkley look fit for midfield, while Danny Drinkwater is ready to serve as standby defensive midfielder.

Hodgson is sure to take Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck who Hodgson regards as his good luck charm, as well as Wayne Rooney. Andy Carroll may or may not be chosen to go to France for his accurate crosses. Deciding which formation and combination of strikers to go with will be key to England’s victory in the European Championship. If Hodgson does go with five strikers, it will be interesting to see how he decides to set up his side.

Wales Euro 2016 update

Meanwhile Wales manager Chris Coleman also has great player options including world-class footballer Gareth Bale for Euro 2016 as he plans how to beat England in their mouth-watering June 16th clash at Stade Felix Bollaert-Lens in France. After an amazing qualifying performance led by Gareth Bale, Wales topped their group, earning Wales a spot at the finals of a major tournament for the first time since 1958. Wales were drawn in the same group as their arch-rivals England, along with Russia and Slovakia.

Robbie Savage, holder of 39 Wales caps was asked if he had any advice for Wales if they were to beat England in their Euro 2016 match this summer. "Well I think they've got to adopt the attitude of Leicester City. I see similarities in the two teams. The underdogs, the togetherness, the team spirit, and I think Leicester have shown everybody that anything's achievable with that kind of thing. If you've got a guy in your team who can be the difference, who Wales have got in Bale - like Leicester have with Mahrez or Vardy - you'll have an opportunity,” replied Savage.

“The spine of the team for Wales is great, Hennessy is calm, Ashley Williams has been great for Swansea, then you've got Ramsey and Allen, then you've got Bale. I think, if you're Wales, get the ball to Bale as often as you can and he can cause damage. If Wales go out there and play without any fear and have a go at England - because defensively, in the group stage, they kept a few clean sheets - it'll be a real opportunity for them," added Savage.

Savage talked about how Wales would be affected in the case that Bale were injured. "If Bale got injured. as much I like to say Wales is not a one-man team - because they did keep clean sheets, they did play very well - but his goals and his assists in the group signifies to me that without him, he is the difference between them qualifying, maybe making the quarter-finals or struggling to get out of the group. I think he is that important," said Savage.
