Europa League update: Manchester United v Fc Midtjylland

Manchester United confirm 2016 Europa League Squad

Louis van Gaal's side face 2014-15 Danish champions FC Midtjylland in their Europa League last-32 tie, with the away leg up first on February 18. As one of the four best third-placed teams in the 2015-16 Champions League, the Reds were given the advantage of being at home in the second leg.

The first leg will be away at FC Midtjylland's MCH Arena in Herning on Thursday February 18, 2016; and the return leg of the tie is scheduled the following week at Old Trafford in Manchester, England on Thursday February 25, 2016.

The two other titan EPL clubs remaining in the Europa League tournament are the Spurs and Liverpool. There is a good chance that one of the three Premier League sides will go on to play in the Europa League Final battle on May 18, 2016 at St. Jakob Park in Basel, Switzerland.

This is the first time the Red Devils have played against FC Midtjylland who finished runners-up in Group D of the Europa League group stages after they knocked out Southampton in the play-offs of the competition. The Danish side dropped out of the 2015-16 Champions League qualifying round following defeat to Cypriot side APOEL.

Current Danish Champions FC Midtjylland were founded in 1999, the year of Manchester United’s amazing Treble triumph. It will be United's fourth trip to face a team in Denmark with previous Champions League clashes against Brondby (1998), FC Copenhagen (2006) and Aalborg (2008).

FC Midtjylland were one of 16 possible options for the Reds in the last-32 draw. Although Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are still in the Europa League tournament, United cannot play any fellow English Premier League sides until the quarter-finals at the earliest due to UEFA rules.

In their 2011 – 2012 campaign, Sir Alex Ferguson’s Man United side played in both UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. Now in 5th place on the EPL Table, United probably did not begin the 2015 – 2016 season with the aim of winning the UEFA Europa League, but victory in the competition will allow them to join a select band of elite clubs.

Manchester United's transfer to the UEFA Europa League after dropping out of the Champions League this campaign means they now have the opportunity to be only the fifth club to win all three major European trophies.

Having won the European Cup in 1968, 1999 and 2008 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1991, a United victory in Basel in May would make them the fifth team to have claimed all three of UEFA's major trophies.

Previous winners of all three UEFA club competitions are superclubs AFC Ajax, Bayern München, Chelsea and Juventus. All but one of the 32 teams left in the 2016 Europa tournament have changed their squads ahead of the deadline for making changes, with up to three new players allowed.

Going into the Last 32, United have added four youngsters to their 2016 Europa League squad, assigning two of the footballers squad numbers for the first time. Reagan Poole and Will Keane enter on the A-list. Nineteen-year-old Portugal youth international goalie Joel Pereira and defender Donald Love will join the B-list. Twenty-one-year-old Love has been given Manchester United's No 37 shirt, and Pereira was given No 40. Midfielder Nick Powell, who was in the Champions League squad, is omitted after joining Championship side Hull City until the end of the season.

Under UEFA rules, no club may have more than 25 players on their Europa League List A during the season, two of whom must be goalkeepers. As a minimum, eight places are reserved exclusively for 'locally-trained players', of which no more than 4 can be 'association-trained players'.
