FC Sevilla win Europa League on penalties
FC Sevilla defeated Benfica 4-2 in a penalty shootout to win the UEFA Europa League final following a 0-0 draw played in Turin on Wednesday.
Despite Benfica being the better of the two sides in the 120 minutes, the Portuguese could not find a way to break Sevilla goalkeeper Beto, who became the hero of the night by saving two penalties from Benfica forwards Oscar Cardozo and Rodrigo.
Benfica fans thought this was the right time to finally end with Bela Guttmann’s curse but they were proved wrong once again.
The legend says that the Hungarian coach cursed Benfica in 1962 after being denied a bonus by the club’s board.
He had led the club to a second successive European cup but after being denied by the directors, he left the meeting vowing the club would not win another European title in 100 years.
Benfica have participated in 8 European finals since then and have lost them all.

For the Andalusian club, victory means their third UEFA Cup/Europa League title and the first since 2007 when they also won it in a penalty shootout against fellow Spanish side Espanyol.
Sevilla will now play the UEFA Super Cup against either Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid in Cardiff on August 12th.
